Notes: Abstract Crack propagation rates have been measured in two aluminium alloys under cyclic and static loading, in air, and in salt solution. On the basis of these results, a model is proposed, whereby corrosion fatigue crack propagation may be interpreted in terms of fatigue and static stress corrosion characteristics. Two interacting processes are operative; one is “stress assisted dissolution”, which tends to inhibit mechanical failure by crack blunting and microbranching. The other is “environment assisted fracture” which occurs too rapidly for dissolution to occur. One or other of these processes is always observed to be dominant. This proposal is discussed in relation to other recent models for corrosion fatigue cracking. The effects of frequency, waveform and mean stress variations are also considered.

Notes: Abstract— Room temperature studies have been made of the effect of neutron damage on the mechanisms concerned with the low-cycle fatigue and tensile test behaviour of stainless steel AISI Type 304. Samples were irradiated in the HFR at Petten to a fast fluence of 5·1024 n m−2 (E 〉 0·1 MeV) at 333 K followed by mechanical testing at room temperature. The low temperature irradiation caused irradiation hardening: the 0·2 yield stress increased from 230 MN m−2 for the unirradiated material to a lower yield point value of 540 MN m−2. Irradiation had no significant effect on fatigue life. The loop type damage was removed by glide dislocations resulting in cyclic softening. Dislocation substructures were observed after fatigue testing: cell structures were more pronounced after fatigue testing to failure the higher the applied strain ranges. The formation of fatigue cracks at the surface of the specimens was observed in a series of specimens exposed to an increasing number of fatigue cycles.

Notes: Abstract Displacements in the region very near to a fatigue crack tip have been observed using a stereoimaging technique. The results of changing the minimum/maximum stress ratio, for a single overload and a single underload are given for a powder metallurgy aluminum alloy. Material motions near the crack tip are complex and depend on the loading characteristic. Compressive strain fields near the crack tip in the unloaded state were found to be highly dependent on load characteristic due to variation in reversed plasticity.

Notes: Abstract— Plain carbon steel specimens subjected to cyclic and superimposed mean stresses show significant plastic strain at intermediate life due to cyclic creep deformation at room temperature. Cyclic creep strains can also be observed in the high cycle region with Nf 〉 2. 106. An extended Haigh-diagram provides information about the resulting mean strain at predetermined cycles.
