    Description / Table of Contents: Stable Carbenium Ions, XX.  - Aryl(dich1oro)carbenium Ions  - a Study on the Structure of an Extraordinary Dicarbenium IonDichloro(mesityl)carbenium-, dichloro(phenyl)carbenium- and mesitylenecarbonylium hexachloroantimonate (4′, 6 and 8′, resp.) were prepared as crystalline salts and chemically and spectroscopically characterized. It could be shown that the extraordinary dicarbenium ion 2, discussed by Hart and coworkers3, is in fact the dichloro(mesityl)carbenium ion (4).
    Notes: Das Dichlor(mesityl)carbenium-, das Dichlor(phenyl)carbenium- und das Mesitylencarbonylium-hexachloroantimonat (4′, 6 bzw. 8′) wurden in Form kristalliner Salze dargestellt und sowohl chemisch als auch spektroskopisch charakterisiert. Es konnte gezeigt werden, daß das von Hart und Mitarbeitern3 diskutierte außergewöhnliche Dicarbeniurnion 2 in Wirklichkeit das Dichlor(mesityl)carbeniumion (4) ist.

    Description: The interaction between the hot gas inferred to exist in clusters of galaxies and the interstellar medium of a spherical galaxy has been studied by means of time-dependent numerical hydrodynamics. Galaxies moving at transonic speeds with respect to the ambient medium lose 80% to 90% of their interstellar gas before a crossing time has elapsed. The amount of gas remaining is consistent with current observational limits to the gas content of elliptical galaxies. Negligible heating of the intracluster gas results from this process. Implications of these results for spiral galaxies with halos, radio sources in clusters of galaxies, and globular clusters in galactic halos are discussed.

    Description: A dual star-tracking system and a system including a telescope, an echelle spectrograph, and a SEC vidicon are the chief components of the Balloon-borne Ultraviolet Stellar Spectrograph (BUSS), which has flown four successful missions. The BUSS missions have yielded 81 spectra for 56 stars, recorded with a resolution of 0.1 A in the wavelength range from 2200 to 3400 A. BUSS observations include: profiles of Mg II lines indicating considerable mass flow in early-type supergiants; Mg II features suggesting a cool expanding outer shell above a hotter chromosphere; emission features in Zeta Tau (a shell star) indicating infalling material; and emission features of the Be star Phi Per suggesting mass outflow.

    Description: The thermal-disequilibrium aspect of the problem of dust-particle formation from a gas phase in an open space environment is discussed in an effort to draw attention to the space condensation environment as an interesting arena for application and extension of the ideas and formalisms of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. It is shown that quasi-steady states with a disequilibrium between the gas-phase kinetic temperature and the condensed-phase internal temperature appear to be the norm of condensation environments in space. Consideration of the case of condensation onto a bulk condensed phase indicates that these quasi-steady states may constitute Prigogine dissipative structures. It is suggested that a proper study of the process of condensation in a space environment should include any effects arising from thermal disequilibrium.

    Description: Zeippen, Seaton, and Morton (1977) recently published profiles of interstellar neutral oxygen lines in Zeta Oph. From a reconsideration of the profiles of visual interstellar lines to that star, it follows that the cloud dominating the O I absorption could have a very small velocity spread, approximately 0.5 km/s. Analysis of the profile of the 1302-A line gives a column density of O I in that cloud of 6.0 + or - 5 x 10 to the 17th per sq cm. This implies an upward revision of the abundance of free oxygen by a factor 1.5 and hence that oxygen is only 25% depleted in the gas to Zeta Oph, contrary to the minimum depletion of a factor 1.8 found by Zeippen, Seaton, and Morton. This small depletion of oxygen in interstellar gas is consistent with the widespread absence of absorption by H2O ice mantles on interstellar dust grains.

    Description: Galactic absorption features observed in high-dispersion far-UV spectra of two Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) stars obtained with the IUE satellite are discussed. The stars observed were HD 38268 (OB + WN5) and HD 38282 (WN6), which lie at a distance of about 55 kpc and in the galactic direction corresponding to a latitude of about -32 deg and a longitude of about 280 deg. The line of sight to these stars passes through the disk and halo of the Milky Way and the halo and disk of the LMC. Evidence is presented for the existence of a hot (somewhat below 1 million K), low-density (about 0.001 H atom per cu cm) Galactic corona.

    Description: The Feyman-diagram technique is used to calculate the differential cross sections for the scattering of zero-rest-mass plane waves of spin 0, 1, and 2 by linearized Schwarzschild and Kerr geometries in the long-wavelength weak-field limit. It is found that the polarization of right (or left) circularly polarized electromagnetic waves is unaffected by the scattering process (i.e., helicity is conserved) and that the two helicity (polarization) states of the photon are scattered differently by the Kerr geometry. This coupling between the photon helicity and the angular momentum of the scatterer also leads to a partial polarization of unpolarized incident light. For gravitational waves, on the other hand, there is neither helicity conservation nor helicity-dependent scattering; the angular momentum of the scatterer has no polarizing effect on incident unpolarized gravitational waves.

    Description: Lehnert (1970) has investigated the question of the relationship between the kinetic temperature and the internal temperature at which a solid coexists with a plasma in a thermal steady state. The reported investigation is a more refined version of Lehnert's preliminary analysis of this relationship. The electric potential of grains is considered along with the ambient radiation field and the grain temperatures in the thermal steady state. An illustrative calculation is conducted of the grain temperatures in the dense regions of the primordial circumsolar colloidal plasma envelope such as envisioned in the Alfven-Arrhenius model (1976) of the origin of the solar system. It is shown that under certain conditions the solid grains can coexist with the plasma phase up to fairly high plasma densities and temperatures.
