Notes: Summary In a double-blind, randomised, cross-over trial clofibrate and a combination of polyenyl phosphatidyl choline (PPC) plus clofibrate were tested in 67 patients with hyperlipoproteinemia. Each treatment lasted for 4 weeks and was separated by a 4 week placebo period. The daily doses were clofibrate 1.2 g and PPC 1.8 g + clofibrate 1.2 g, respectively. The results revealed that polypenyl phosphatidyl choline prevented the elevation of LDL-cholesterol induced by clofibrate treatment, and that the lipid-lowering potency of the combination did not differ significantly from that of clofibrate. Since elevation of LDL-cholesterol is considered to increase the risk of coronary heart disease, the combination appears to offer a therapeutic advantage. Despite the significance of this clinical observation, a final decision may only be obtained from a prospective, long term investigation in patients with coronary heart disease and hyperlipoproteinemia.

Notes: Summary 11C which is cyclotron produced by14N(P, α)11C(half-life 20.1M) was use as a tracer of bicarbonate to determine its movements from a nutrient solution through roots to stems and leaves of bush bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. Improved Tendergreen). The short time involved and the high solution pH minimized the need for use of the Hederson Hasselbach equation for activity correction. Quantities of11C did move into roots, stems and leaves with a sharp decreasing gradient (root/stem=14.5, stems/leaves=11.7) More11C moved into plants with KHCO3 than with NaHCO3. The (NH4)2SO4 enhanced11C uptake and KNO3 than with competition indicated possibility of some uptake of HCO 3 − . In an experiment withGalenia pubescens (Eckl. and Zeyh.) Druce, the11C was more readily moved to stems and leaves than in bush bean indicating substantial uptake of HCO 3 − .

Description: The paper describes the modal dispersion characteristics of electromagnetic waves traveling along the azimuthally magnetized ferrite-loaded coaxial transmission line and the ferrite-loaded wire. The modal dispersion curves are used to determine the pass and stop bands of normal propagation. Boundary-value problems were solved with Bolle-Heller functions. The dispersion characteristics of transverse electric modes are presented as plots of the normalized propagation constant vs the normalized frequency.

Description: A real time VHF downlink communication system is described for transmitting side-looking airborne radar (SLAR) data directly from an aircraft to a portable ground/shipboard receiving station. Use of this receiving station aboard the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Mackinaw for generating real-time photographic quality radar images is discussed. The system was developed and demonstrated in conjunction with the U.S Coast Guard and NOAA National Weather Service as part of the Project Icewarn all weather ice information system for the Great Lakes Winter Navigation Program.
