Notes: The resolution problem in X-ray energy-dispersive diffractometry is discussed. It is shown that for a given characteristic of the solid-state detector system and a given range of interplanar spacings, an optimum scattering angle can be easily found for any divergence of the incident and scattered beams.

Notes: The special features of X-ray energy-dispersive powder and single-crystal diffraction using synchrotron radiation are discussed on the basis of experiments performed at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, DESY. The method is shown to be of particular value for fast structure identifications, experiments for which large scattering vectors are important, studies of phase transformations and chemical reactions at elevated temperatures and high-pressure studies. Studies of time-dependent phenomena using pulsed external fields are discussed.

Notes: Test experiments were made using the X-ray energy-dispersive method at the storage ring DORIS (Hamburg) working in the single-bunch mode. It is shown that the spectral distribution of the incident beam calculated from the storage-ring parameters is in very good agreement with that derived from measured diffraction patterns of known substances, and thus it can be used for structural studies. This is illustrated with results of profile-fitting refinement applied to urea (CH4N2O) and naphthalene (C10H8). It is also shown that because of an improved detector system and the time structure of the radiation emitted from the storage ring one is able to record 7 × 104 photons per second and obtain reliable patterns in times of the order of 1 s.

Notes: Plagioclase feldspars with chemical formula Na0.5Ca0.5Al1.5Si2.5O8 for their bulk composition consist of lamellar structures on the 1000 Å scale at low temperatures. The lamellae have different compositions as a result of exsolution. In electron-diffraction patterns certain of the Kikuchi lines from these lamellae are doubled. These have been utilized for lattice-parameter determination by a method which is based on measurements of the differences in the orientation of the atomic planes in the lamellae. The factors determining the accuracy are discussed. For two specimens it is found that there is a difference of about 0.005 Å between the a axes and about 0.15° between the γ angles in the two lamellae.

Notes: The Debye-Waller factor for powdered magnesium was measured in the temperature range 293 to 700 K by the energy-dispersive X-ray method. The results are compared with published theoretical calculations based on the quasi-harmonic and the anharmonic approximations. Anisotropy was found in the behaviour of the temperature factor B(T), with excellent agreement in the a axis direction between the experimental and theoretical calculations within the quasi-harmonic approximation. In the c axis direction, however, the experimental values at increasing temperature exceed the theoretical values, even in the anharmonic approximation.

Notes: The method of determining the ratio between lattice parameter and electron wavelength from Kikuchi-line intersections with an accuracy about 0.1% which was described by Høier [Acta Cryst. (1969). A25, 516–518] for cubic crystals, is extended to crystals with any lower symmetry. A computer program using a least-squares refinement has been developed and applied to the determination of unknown lattice parameters in an orthorhombic olivine and a triclinic feldspar crystal. A combination of energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and Kikuchi-line intersection measurements can in many cases be utilized to increase the accuracy in the determination of the lattice parameters. For the feldspars such a combination of measurements can be used to determine the distribution of the Al and Si atoms in the tetrahedral positions of the structure.

Notes: Two single-crystal energy-dispersive crystallographic methods (the fixed-crystal method and the rotating-crystal method) are described and investigated. Formulae for integrated intensities are derived for mosaic and perfect single crystals. Experimental results and a comparison between measured and calculated integrated intensities for a perfect germanium crystal are given. Special features and possible applications of the methods are discussed.

Notes: Polarization measurements of the primary X-ray beam produced by thick copper and tungsten anodes are reported and formulas derived for integrated intensities of Bragg reflections in energy-dispersive diffractometry with the polarization of the primary beam taken into account. It was found that for an angle of 45° between the scattering plane and the plane containing the electron beam and the primary beam, the influence of polarization vanishes, while it increases as the angle changes from 45° to either 0 or 90°. For the latter values, the influence of polarization is considerable at high photon energies and at scattering angles close to 90°.

Notes: Summary It was considered that double-blind crossover studies of therapeutic efficacy after acute injury could well be done in patients who required surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth from both sides of the lower jaw. In the present trial 24 healthy patients received either placebo or ibuprofen (Brufen®: 400 mg three times daily), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent, for 5 days commencing the day before surgery. Treatments were given on the two occasions when impacted wisdom teeth were to be removed from one side or other of the lower jaw. A number of objective and subjective parameters were recorded for paired comparison of the post-operative courses, including swelling, trismus and pain. A mechanical device which allows simple and accurate measurement of cheek swelling is described. On the 1st, 3rd and 5th post-operative days in the ibuprofen group the measured swelling averaged 93, 89 and 82%, respectively, of that in the placebo group; the corresponding α-values were 0.35, 0.06 and 0.07. Patients with less swelling after ibuprofen were not always those with a high serum concentration of the drug. Ibuprofen significantly reduced pain on the day of the operation. This may at least partly account for less trismus and the preference of the patients for their post-operative courses with ibuprofen. Examination of various haematological parameters did not reveal any significant difference between the two operations. Subjective scores indicated that neither wound-healing nor bleeding was affected by ibuprofen, nor were any side effects detected.
