Notes: The valence tautomers of C2H3N have been examined by non-empirical molecular orbital calculations using two split-valence shell basis sets. All geometries were fully optimized using the 4-31G basis set and these structures were then used in 6-31G basis set calculations. The order of stability of the three possible cyclic isomers is 1-azirine 〉 cyclic carbene 〉 2-azirine. The profiles for conversion of vinylmethylene into cyclopropene, vinylnitrene into 1-arizine, and iminomethylene into 2-azirine have all been shown to have barriers.

Notes: The geometries of the amines NH2X and amido anions NHX-, where X = H, CH3, NH2, OH, F, C2H, CHO, and CN have been optimized using ab initio molecular orbital calculations with a 4-31G basis set. The profiles to rotation about the N—X bonds in CH3NH-, NH2NH-, and HONH- are very similar to those for the isoprotic and isoelectronic neutral compounds CH3OH, NH2OH, and HOOH. The amines with unsaturated bonds adjacent to the nitrogen atoms undergo considerable skeletal rearrangement on deprotonation such that most of the negative charge of the anion is on the substituent. The computed order of acidity for the amines NH2X is X = CN 〉 HCO 〉 F ≈ C2H 〉 OH 〉 NH2 〉 CH3 〉 H and for the reaction NHX- + H+ → NH2X the computed energies vary over the range 373-438 kcal/mol.

Notes: A computational algorithm for the detailed simulation of a batch emulsion polymerization reactor is discussed. The model is applied to the polymerization of methyl methacrylate, and the model predictions are shown to be in good agreement with experimental data. Further computations show the influence of reactor operating conditions on the polymer product and the reactor performance.

Notes: Coupled diffusion generated countergradient transport through membranes is analyzed by experimental and theoretical means. Membrane wedge interferometer experiments on an ethanol—water-cellophane membrane system show that net countergradient mass transfer of the less permeable component ethanol may be generated over a wide concentration range. A theoretical analysis of an idealized membrane separating two binary bulk solutions is developed to display further the major features of diffusional coupling effects, and good agreement between observed and predicted countergradient transport characteristics is shown.

Notes: A membrane wedge interferometer was designed for obtaining steady state mass transfer data on liquid-membrane-liquid systems. Procedures were developed for analyzing the diffusive transfer process, and experiments were conducted on the ethyl alcohol-water-cellophane membrane system to obtain the type of data needed for elucidating mechanisms of membrane transport. The proposed technique provides an accurate method of studying membrane transport without the troublesome complications which characterize other methods.

Notes: 2-Deoxyglucose transport was characterized in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) and rabbit alveolar macrophages (AM). The Km was 1 mM for human PMN and 1.6 mM for rabbit AM, and the Vmax was 0.66 × 10-3 μmoles/45 sec/106 PMN and 5.09 × 10-4 μmoles/45 sec/106 AM. The rate of 2-deoxyglucose transport was the same before and after phagocytosis in PMN from normal individuals and three patients with chronic granulomatous disease, as well as rabbit AM. Studies of the kinetics of 2-deoxyglucose transport and intracellular fate of 2-deoxyglucose in human PMN indicate that the nature of the membrane transport system is not altered by phagocytosis. The results support the concept that the plasma membrane is mosaic in character with geographically separate transport and phagocytic sites.

Notes: Our previously published gas chromatography chemical ionization mass spectrometry stable isotope dilution assay for clonazepam and its 7-amino metabolite in plasma has been modified to obtain more consistent recoveries of the amine metabolite and to permit the determination of the 7-acetamido metabolite of clonazepam. In addition, the manuscript describes the details of a method for a least squares analysis of the nonlinear standard curves associated with the use of certain stable isotope labeled analogs as internal standard.

Notes: Normal and resonance Raman effects in gaseous chlorine were carefully studied with a powerful argon ion laser. No resonance Raman behaviour could be detected in the spectra excited by visible laser lines with wavelengths down to 4545Å. The fine structures of the normal Raman spectra were examined. Resonance Raman spectra were obtained with the 3638 and 3511 Å UV line excitation. Progressions with seven overtones were recorded. The fine structures in each overtone region were analysed and assigned as the Q and S band heads of various isotopic molecules. The Raman cross-section was enhanced only by a factor of 1.3 in the resonance case and the integrated intensity of each overtone was about one-third of that of the fundamental. Those two characteristics indicate that the resonance Raman term in gaseous chlorine is small in comparison with the normal Raman term even when the energy of the excitation laser line is 7593 cm-1 above the dissociation limit.
