    Notes: The radiation-induced graft copolymerization of styrene onto wool in aqueous methanol was studied over a temperature range of 0°C to 45°C and a radiation dose-rate range of 0.05 to 2.0 Mrad/hr. The rate of grafting was found to obey the classical polymerization equation. Chain transfer to wool was found to play an important role in the grafting process, and the molecular weight of the resulting graft copolymer was found to be independent of the irradiation dose. The activation energy of the graft process changed from a value of 4.7 kcal/mole below 19°C to a value of 18.7 kcal/mole above this temperature. This phenomenon is ascribed to the formation of hydrogen-bonded systems between the protic solvent molecules and the protein chain in the wool.

    Notes: The real plate number concept is interpreted in terms of the fundamental properties of a chromatograph. It is shown that the linear relationship between the total peak width at half height, (b0.5)T, t, and k is only an approximation of the more general linear relationship between (b0.5)2T, t and (1 + k)2. In the case where the relationship between (b0.5)T, t and k approaches linearity, it is concluded, firstly, that b0 = a, i. e., b0 is a column property and independent of extra-column phenomena and, secondly, that nreal=ntheor. When the relationship becomes non-linear, b0 is determined partly by extra-column phenomena, but not in terms of a useful relationship. It is concluded that it is unnecessary to introduce the parameters a, b0 and nreal, since they all have counterparts in the established theory of chromatography. These counterparts prove to be equally useful in the practical analysis of chromatographic systems.

    Notes: The linearity of the relationship between σT,t2 and (1 + k)2 is studied with the view of using it for the evaluation of GC equipment. Based on appropriate analytical expressions it is concluded that in general this relationship is not linear and that practical procedures for column evaluation should be developed that take this non-linearity into account.

    Notes: The radiation-induced copolymerization of vinyl acetate with diethyl maleate and with diethyl fumarate was investigated in the temperature range from -40 to 90°C over a wide range of comonomer compositions. Both the rates of copolymerization and the molecular weights of the resulting copolymers were found to depend strongly on the initial comonomer compositions. The apparent activation energy was found to change at 13°C with an increase in temperature from a value of 1.76 kcal/mole to a value of 4.31 kcal/mole in the copolymerization with diethyl maleate, while in the case of the copolymerization with diethyl fumarate the apparent activation energy changed at 21°C from a value of 1.76 kcal/mole to a value of 5.98 kcal/mole. Scavenger studies indicate that a free-radical mechanism prevails over the entire temperature range investigated in the case of both copolymerizations.
