    Notes: By repeated selection for longer survival in an isotonic solution of glycerol, a stable subline of Novikoff rat hepatoma cells has been isolated. The cells exhibit markedly increased resistances to osmotic lysis in isotonic solutions of glycerl. They are twice as large and have twice as many chromosomes as cells of the parental line. It is suggested that the osmotic stress procedure can be extended for the selection of numerous kinds of mutants and can be used as a method of analysis of membrane properties.

    Description: The far IR nighttime absorption spectrum of the earth's atmosphere above 14 km is determined from observations of the bright moon. The spectra were obtained using a Michelson interferometer attached to a 30-cm telescope aboard a high-altitude jet aircraft. Comparison with a single-layer model atmosphere implies a vertical column of 3.4 plus or minus 0.4 microns of precipitable water on 30 August 1971 and 2.4 plus or minus 0.3 microns of precipitable water on 6 January 1972.-

    Description: Observation equations for the M2 ocean tide are computed from Geos 3 data for the long periodic variations of the inclination and node of the orbit. M2 ocean tide parameter values C22+ = 3.23 + or - 0.25 cm, epsilon 22+ = 331 + or - 6 deg, and epsilon 42+ = 113 + or - 6 deg are determined. With the assumption of zero solid tide phase lag, the lunar tidal acceleration is mostly (85%) due to the C22+ term in the expansion of the M2 tide with additional small contributions from the O1 and N2 tides. The calculated value for the tidal acceleration in lunar longitude is -27.4 + or - 3 arc sec/sq (100 yr) which is similar to values determined from astronomical data. The mean elements of Geos 3 are presented in tabular form.

    Description: Measurements of N2, O, He, and Ar densities from neutral gas mass spectrometers on four satellites and inferred O2 and H densities from an ion mass spectrometer have been combined to produce a model of longitude/UT variations in thermospheric neutral composition and temperature. The longitude/UT model is an extension of the mass spectrometer-incoherent scatter thermospheric model (Hedin et al., 1977) and uses spherical harmonic terms dependent on geographic latitude, longitude, and UT. The combined longitude and UT variations reflect the influence of the geomagnetic field but indicate that the variations may not simply be represented in magnetic coordinates.

    Description: A detailed study of the diamagnetic properties of magnetospheric plasma injected at synchronous altitudes is presented. Defining the magnetic induction field B = H + 4piM, the magnetization M is computed from the plasma distribution functions and it is shown that the diamagnetic contribution of the particles having energies of 100 eV to 81 eV can completely account for observed changes in the magnetic induction energy density. Computation of the resulting magnetic field H indicates that the current system in the magnetosphere is complex. Significant changes in H have been observed in a few minutes time scale. Studies of the particle density at various magnetic moments show that both protons and electrons together or individually act to cause the diamagnetic variations in B.

    Description: Positive-ion electrical-conductivity measurements, which are now performed with 4-cm diameter meteorological rocket payloads, provide a simple means of monitoring the NO concentration in the mesosphere, as well as the ionization variability. A wavelike dynamical structure is observed at low latitudes. Parachute-borne Gerdien mobility analyzers show, in addition, ion mobility spectra which spread from much greater to much less than that expected for simple gas-phase ions in the mesosphere and also indicate an ion clustering chain in the stratosphere. Large particulate ions apparently form in the daytime and grow very large at night. An instrument combining the mobility analyzer with a flashing source of ionizing radiation could be used as an NO(x) spectrometer.

    Description: Results are discussed for radio interferometric observations of extragalactic radio sources with antennas at Haystack Observatory in Massachusetts and the Owens Valley Radio Observatory in California (3900-km baseline) during 14 separate experiments distributed between September 1976 and May 1978. Simultaneous analysis of the data from several experiments yields estimates of changes in the x component of pole position and in earth's rotation (UT1). Comparison with the corresponding results obtained by the Bureau International de l'Heure (BIH) reveals systematic differences. In particular, the trends in the radio interferometric determinations of the changes in pole position are found to agree more closely with those from the International Polar Motion Service and from Doppler observations of satellites than with those from the BIH.

    Notes: The accessory muscle of the walking leg of the horseshoe crab, Tachypleus gigas, was examined electron microscopically. The muscle fibers vary in size but are small in diameter, when compared with other arthropod skeletal muscles. They are striated with A, I, Z and poorly defined H bands. The sarcomere length ranges from 3-10 μm with most sarcomeres in the range of about 6 μm. The myofilaments are arranged in lamellae in larger fibers and less well organized in the smaller ones. Each thick filament is surrounded by 9-12 thin filaments which overlap. The SR is sparse but well organized to form a fenestrated collar around the fibrils. Individual SR tubules are also seen among the myofibrils. Long transverse tubules extend inward from the sarcolemma to form dyads or triads with the SR at the A-I junction. Both dyads and triads coexist in a single muscle fiber, a feature believed to have evolutionary significance. The neuromuscular relationship is unique. In the region of synaptic contact, the sarcolemma is usually elevated to form a large club-shaped structure containing no myofilaments and few other organelles. The axons or axon terminals and glial elements penetrate deep into the club-shaped sarcoplasm and form synapses with the fiber. As many as 13 terminals have been observed within a single section. Synaptic vesicles of two types are found in the axon terminals.

    Notes: A hitherto unknown secondary sex character in male frogs consists of a series of connective tissue bands which extends the entire length of both layers of the Obliquus muscle, at both their dorsal and ventral borders. Extensions of the ventral bands may be carried inward toward the midline at certain of the inscriptiones tendinae. These bands are named the Lineae masculinae. They are clearly visible in specimens from which the skin has been removed, and are visible even through the skin in living specimens of certain species of Kaloula.Ninety-one genera and 553 species of the frogs and toads of the world were examined for the presence or absence of this structure. It is distinct in the common American and European ranids, such as Rana pipiens and Rana esculenta. It is entirely absent in many genera. When present it is found only in adult males, being absent in sexually immature males and females of all ages. Examination revealed no seasonal variations in males of Rana pipiens. This indicates that there is some correlation between the expression of this character and the sexual hormones. No function is assigned to the Linea masculina, although it is suggested that it may be associated in some way with voice production. A discussion of the taxonomic distribution of the character is included.
