Notes: Equipment has been developed in which fermentation processes for fastidious, pathogenic micro-organisms can be operated on a pilot-plant scale. Experience has shown the need for the development of concepts, techniques, and equipment meeting more stringent requirements than those ordinarily encountered in the fermentation industry. A system has been developed for the preparation of pure cultures which may be used either for the development of processes or in the preparation of substantial quantities of pure cultures. The equipment includes specially designed valves, fermentors, piping arrangement, and requires special methods of operation in order to maintain pure cultures during growth of the organism. The number of cultures of pathogenic, fastidious micro-organisms contaminated in the systems commonly used in industry is materially greater than the number of contaminated cultures produced in the system described.

Notes: A composite of poly(perfluorobutadiene) and perfluoroammonium hexafluoroarsenate has been developed that can be used as an efficient source of fluorine atoms because the salt does not react with the polymer. This point has been demonstrated by showing that no more than trace amounts of NF3, which is formed in most reactions of perfluoroammonium salts, are formed by heating the composite to 120°C or by maintaining the composite at 80°C for four days. The small amount of NF3 that is formed can be explained as resulting from reactions with trace impurities.

Notes: Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) has been successfully used to determine the location of flame-retardant polymers or reagents and crosslinking and oil/water-repellent reagents in relation to fiber surfaces of chemically modified cotton fabrics and cotton/polyester blends. Changes in intensity of characteristic ESCA element signals were followed as the particle size of the treated fabric varied. Dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) and the flame-retardant polymer formed from tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (Thpc) and urea penetrate and are homogeneously deposited throughout cotton fabrics. The oil/water-repellent finish, FC-218, and the flame retardants from the THPOH/NH3 reaction and tris(dibromopropyl) phosphate are deposited on the surfaces of both cotton and polyester fibers.

Notes: Cotton cellulose was subjected to repeated swelling treatment with aqueous solutions of ethylenediamine (EDA). Although EDA is capable of effecting a lattice change from cellulose I to cellulose II during successive swelling treatments, resistance to lattice transformation is offered during the first treatment in spite of the formation of cellulose-EDA complex. This is attributed to a structural hinderance existing in the cellulose molecule itself. There is considerable improvement in the lateral order of the treated cellulose on subjecting it to repeated swelling operations with EDA.

Notes: Cellulose II and cellulose I samples were treated respectively with a strong solution of sodium deuteroxide in D2O and a 99% solution of ethylenediamine. The complexes were washed with D2O and the nature of the OD bands were studied after rehydrogenating the sample. The infrared spectra of these rehydrogenated samples showed well-resolved OD bands which are resistant to reexchange. The Characteristic bands are discussed and compared with the predicted OH-OD frequency shifts.

Notes: The thermal conductivity of a solid or gas filled polymer is used in processing or end use application calculations. Numerous theoretical and empirical correlations are found in the literature. A careful review of these models indictes that no one correlation or technique accurately predicts the thermal conductivity of all types of composites. The investigation indicated that for solid filled composites the Lewis and Nielsen equation fitted the experimental data best for the range of fillers tested. However, for a gas filled polymer, none of the theoretical models proved adequate. The semi-empirical approach of Harding showed considerable merit.

Notes: The high strength to weight ratio of glass reinforced plastics (FRF) combined with their fabrication flexibility has led to increasing use in new applications that no other materials could satisfy. FRF often replaces metals in traditional applications. Increasingly stringent flammability requirements have led to the use of alumina trihydrate filler, usually in combination with halogenated rosins. However, difficulties in compounding and fabrication often limit, the alumina trihydrate loading. This requires substantial increments of halogenated resin to meet specific flammability restrictions. In such composites, the price of the compound may be too high for a given application and one must often compromise substantially on both processing and physical property performance. Alumina trihydrate filled systems commonly suffer from poor glass fiber wet out and mold flow, with reduced strength and uniformity in fabricated parts. This paper describes how a unique silane pretreatment for alumina trihydrate permits bulk molding compound (BMC)/sheet molding compound (SMC) formulations to be developed with increased loadings of the filler, reduced filler wet out time, and improvements in glass dispersion, mold flow out, strength and uniformity of the composite. The paper also shows how the halogenated resin content of flame retarded systems may be minimized by the use of this silane treated alumina trihydrate.

Notes: The rates of nitration of benzene by nitric acid in mixed acid to produce mononitrobenzene have been measured in well-emulsified reaction mixtures in the temperature range from 34° to 54°C. The acid-phase compositions ranged from 1.6 mole % nitric acid and 27 mole % sulfuric acid to 35 mole % nitric acid and zero % sulfuric acid; the organicphase composition ranged from 4 to 95 mole % benzene, and the relative extent of the acid and organic phases was varied from 25 to 80 volume % acid phase. The reaction rate based on the total volume of the reacting mixture is shown to be a function of the phase compositions, temperature, and volume % of acid phase.
