    Description: During the initial space-time evolution of an electron beam injected into the corona, the strong beam-plasma interaction occurs at the head of the beam, leading to the amplification of a quasi-monochromatic large-amplitude plasma wave that stabilizes by trapping the beam particles. Oscillation of the trapped particles in the wave troughs amplifies sideband electrostatic waves. The sidebands and the main wave subsequently decay to observable transverse electromagnetic waves through the parametric decay instability. This process gives rise to the elementary striation bursts. Owing to velocity dispersion in the beam and the density gradient of the corona, the entire process may repeat at a finite number of discrete plasma levels, producing chains of elementary bursts. All the properties of the type IIIb bursts are accounted for in the context of the theory.

    Description: Results of correlative studies employing Skylab/ATM X-Ray Telescope filter-heliograms, solar magnetograms, and H alpha spectroheliograms of the complex solar active region McMath 12387 for 10-18 June 1973 are presented. Evolutionary changes within the complex region are discussed. Magnetic field calculations, using both potential and force-free models, have been performed and the results are presented. We also determine temperatures, emission measures, and electron densities and show the variation with time of the X-ray emission from the entire complex.

    Description: Decametric storm radiation during the period July-August 1970 has been observed simultaneously with a high sensitivity spectrograph at Arecibo Observatory and with the log-periodic, swept-frequency array of the Clark Lake Radio Observatory. The observations complement each other; different types of fine structure emissions can be easily identified on the spectrograph records and their position can be determined from the swept-frequency recordings. The relative positions of the different emissions which have been observed during the storms are studied. Four distinct sources appear to be present. The continuum emission, the type I bursts and the flare-related type III's are all emitted at different locations. The storm type III bursts, type IIIb's and drift pairs overlap in position, but appear at different locations than the previously mentioned sources.

    Description: Examination of X-ray images obtained by the S-054 X-ray spectrographic telescope on Skylab shows the presence of some atypical X-ray-emitting coronal structures in active regions which are not consistent with potential extrapolations of photospheric magnetic fields. Analysis of the observed temporal changes in the X-ray-emitting active-region structures demonstrates that the majority of these consist of brightness changes representing temperature (and perhaps density) variations of the material in the loops.
