Notes: Abstract Diffusion problem with variabale diffusion coefficient in a spherical biological system is investigated. Also included in this study is the biological reaction of the Michaelis-Menten type. The problem formulated consists of a highly nonlinear differential equation which, however, can be efficiently solved by the orthogonal collocation method on a digital computer. The effects of the dimensionless governing parameters on the transient and steady state concentration responses are parametrically examined for the diffusion system with and without biological reaction.

Notes: Abstract The steady state distribution of oxygen tension in thein vivo cornea is estimated in the present study by using a nonlinear oxygen consumption rate equation of the Michaelis-Menten type. Such a rate expression is more accurate than the previous simplified versions in predicting the oxygen consumption rate. It is found that for an open eye with or without contact lens, the oxygen tensions predicted previously are in good agreement with these predicted in the present work. However, for a closed eye with or without contact lens, the previous predictions underestimate the oxygen tension.

Notes: Summary In the sex pheromone controlling experiments, not only large number of the males of the almond moth and Indian meal moth, but also great number of ovipositional females were caught. The increased catch of the fertilized females was due to the presence of detergent in the water.

Notes: Abstract Particle deposition in a tube with laminar flow is investigated. An analytical procedure is developed for predicting the particle deposition efficiency by incorporating the velocity of thermophoresis in the equation of conservation of particles. Effects of important parameters, such as temperature difference between the inlet gas and the tube wall, particle size and the Lewis number, on the particle precipitation efficiency are examined. Also considered in this work is the assumption of constant temperature gradient as a limiting case. It is found that particle precipitation efficiency predicted by using constant temperature gradient is much optimistic.

Notes: Abstract The nonisothermal non-Newtonian chemical reactions in a tubular reactor are investigated. The non-Newtonian fluid is assumed to be characterized by the Ostwald-de Waele power-law model, which represents the majority of laminar flow of food products and many polymer melts and solutions. The temperature effect on the viscosity is considered and is found to be very significant. The effects of other important dimensionless parameters on the reactor performances are examined.

Notes: Abstract Concentration-dependent diffusion of solute in a composite slab is investigated. The complex diffusion problem can be described by a set of nonlinear diffusion equations which is coupled to each other through the nonlinear interfacial boundary conditions. A two-layer diffusion is illustrated and the coupled nonlinear diffusion equations are conveniently solved by the orthogonal collocation method. Numerical simulation of the example reveals many interesting diffusion characteristics which are quite different from those in a single slab diffusion system.

Notes: Transient heat conduction in a composite slab is investigated in the present work by using the orthogonal collocation method. The present numerical method is found to be quite efficient and highly stable even for the power-type temperature dependence of thermal conductivity which often cuases severe computational instability to many numerical methods.

Notes: It is shown that the mass transfer resistance can significantly distort the linearity of the Lineweaver-Burk plot of the kinetic data for a microbial culture which forms aggregates. For small flocs, the linearity of the Lineweaver-Burk plot is largely retained, but a different slope and intercept will be obtained compared with flocs free from mass transfer resistance. For large flocs, the Lineweaver-Burk plot shows pronounced curvature at high limiting substrate concentrations. Hence, if the true intrinsic kinetic parameters are to be extracted from a highly flocculating microbial culture, sufficient agitation has to be provided to remove the effect of mass transfer resistance. If the behavior of the flocculating microbial culture is to be explored, additional values for some physical parameters, such as the effective diffusion coefficient of the substrate in floc, the floc density, and the mean floc radius, are needed.
