Summary Experiments were conducted to show the applicability of convective diffusion theory to ion transport in sand. At low flow rates net transport is composed of convection and diffusion (based on a molecular diffusion coefficient). It was shown that a condition of dynamic equilibrium may be established in which convection and diffusion just balance (zero net transport). It was also shown that the relevant flow parameter was the Peclet number, based upon the molecular diffusion coefficient.
