Notes: Abstract Under conditions of laboratory bioassay in which aphids were infected by total immersion in spore suspensions, blastospores of the entomopathogenic fungus,Verticillium lecanii (Zimm.)Viégas, were twice as pathogenic as conidia for the aphid,Macrosiphoniella sanborni Gill., on a numerical basis. By comparison, on a live-spore volume basis blastospores, being larger, were only ×0.6 as pathogenic. Blastospores were also, numerically, more pathogenic when healthy aphids were infected from spore-covered leaf discs in the laboratory. LC50s of the 2 assay methods differed by more than × 100. In glasshouses, the 2 spore-types achieved similar levels of control ofM. sanborni.

Notes: A relatively simple, reproducible method for the determination of grafting in high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) shows that high- and low-graft HIPS exhibit differences in morphology following treatment with an oxidative etching solution. Because this method is quite sensitive to small differences, it yields a more definitive evaluation of grafting in the finished polymer than any other previously used analytical procedure. These differences have been quantified, and the data used to compare relative grafting in polystyrenes reinforced with the same or different rubber types. The method shows an increase in grafting when either the peroxide initiator feed level or 1,2-vinyl content of the polybutadiene is increased.

Description: A fuel vapor injector/igniter system was evaluated for its effect on automobile engine performance, fuel economy, and exhaust emissions. Improved fuel economy and emissions, found during the single cylinder tests were not realized with a multicylinder engine. Multicylinder engine tests were conducted to compare the system with both a stock and modified stock configuration. A comparison of cylinder-to-cylinder equivalence ratio distribution was also obtained from the multicylinder engine tests. The multicylinder engine was installed in a vehicle was tested on a chassis dynamometer to compare the system with stock and modified stock configurations. The fuel vapor injector/igniter system (FIDC) configuration demonstrated approximately five percent improved fuel economy over the stock configuration, but the modified stock configuration demonstrated approximately twelve percent improved fuel economy. The hydrocarbon emissions were approximately two-hundred-thirty percent higher with the FIDC system than with the stock configuration. Both the FIDC system and the modified stock configuration adversely affected driveability. The FIDC system demonstrated a modest fuel savings, but with the penalty of increased emissions, and loss of driveability.

Description: Fuel consumption, range, and emissions data were obtained while operating a hydrogen-fueled postal delivery vehicle over a defined Postal Service Driving Cycle and the 1975 Urban Driving Cycle. The vehicle's fuel consumption was 0.366 pounds of hydrogen per mile over the postal driving cycle and 0.22 pounds of hydrogen per mile over the urban driving cycle. These data correspond to 6.2 and 10.6 mpg equivalent gasoline mileage for the two driving cycles, respectively. The vehicle's range was 24.2 miles while being operated on the postal driving cycle. Vehicle emissions were measured over the urban driving cycle. HC and CO emissions were quite low, as would be expected. The oxides of nitrogen were found to be 4.86 gm/mi, a value which is well above the current Federal and California standards. Vehicle limitations discussed include excessive engine flashbacks, inadequate acceleration capability the engine air/fuel ratio, the water injection systems, and the cab temperature. Other concerns are safety considerations, iron-titanium hydride observed in the fuel system, evidence of water in the engine rocker cover, and the vehicle maintenance required during the evaluation.
