Notes: The influence on muscle pH of low voltage (〈120v) electrical stimulation applied to beef carcasses shortly after slaughter was studied in two experiments. In the first, sides of beef were stimulated for different times with voltages ranging from 20–110v direct current, whilst in the second stimulation was with 21v direct current for 4 min. The effect of electrical stimulation was to induce a significantly lower muscle pH at 1, 4 and 24 hr when comparisons were made with unstimulated carcasses or sides.

Notes: The fluidized-bed vapour phase deposition of β-SiC on nuclear fuel granules can produce polygonal crystals. The examination of these and their etch figures by scanning electron microscopy indicates an internal structure composed of {111} planar sheets. The disposition of these sheets is discussed with the aid of three-dimensional models. It is concluded that a maximum of four sheet orientations can occur. From these, six families of sheet pairs can be made by appropriate combinations: these are labelled according to the [110] directions of the spines created by their intersections. The sheets produce traces on the external crystal faces, and the various possible juxtapositions of these traces are discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] Fig. 1 shows that oxygen was evolved immediately after illumination of a mixture from which PGA (3-phospho-glycerate) and R5P were initially omitted. This evolution is attributable to the reduction of NADP and it ceased (or slowed, depending on the activity and content of the chloroplast extract) ...

Notes: [Auszug] Chloroplasts utilize light energy to convert carbon dioxide to sugars and other compounds. As this review article shows, work with isolated chloroplasts has done much to reveal how the necessary “reducing power” is generated, and to establish the importance of membranes in ...

Notes: [Auszug] SIR,?Although man's existence depends, and has always depended, on nuclear fusion, the only functional system so far devised is some millions of miles removed and its major benefits are brought to us via photosynthesis. The "land issue" which should be faced is the fact that most surfaces are ...

Notes: [Auszug] Four cross-bred sheep were used in this study. At laparotomy between 115 and 120 d of gestation catheters were implanted into a foetal femoral artery, tarsal vein and amniotic sac and also into the foetal urinary bladder using procedures described previously16'17. Daily samples (2ml) were taken ...

Notes: [Auszug] We have critically reviewed all such results previously published, in the light of current standards of accuracy: some are accepted, some revised and some rejected. We have also analysed a number of fresh orbits, giving a total of 44 values of the atmospheric rotation rate (rev d?1) from 35 ...

Notes: Summary Highly ordered and elaborate cytoplasmic complexes containing microtubular elements are described for the first time in the cyanophytesNostoc sphaericum andNostoc sp. Each complex consists of 2 major components: the dark, thin amorphous plate which can be considered as comparable to a “microtubular organizing center”; the second component, the perpendicular system, is made up of a large number of microtubular elements anchored to and oriented at right angles to the plate. These elements are made up of protofilaments and may penetrate into the nucleoplasm. A third component, the parallel system of microtubules, may occur on the opposite side of the plate. There are, as a rule, two microtubular complexes in each cell; each complex occupies the polar position and is located close to the septum on either side of the cell. Although their function is unknown at present, it is possible that they may represent a primitive form of “microtubular organizing center” which plays a part in division, and movement of the filaments.
