    Notes: The effects of reduced-cultivation Systems on weeds in cereals are reviewed. Increasing dependence of these Systems upon Chemical weed control together with changes in the soil physical environment are expected to modify existing weed floras. Annual-grass weeds are likely to remain a problem with the use of minimal cultivations, particularly when early drilling is practised, while hitherto unimportant species may become more prevalent, e.g. Bromus spp. Furthermore, reduced cultivations may encourage the establishment of wind-disseminated species. However, annual dicotyledonous species characteristic of arable land are expected to continue to decline.

    Notes: In field and screenhouse experiments, pollination of inflorescences of three pearl millet F1 hybrids and two male-sterile (ms) lines with fresh viable pollen 5–8 days after inoculation with a Tolyposporium penicillariae sporidial suspension reduced smut severities significantly compared with inoculated, non-pollinated control plants. Smut development was not significantly reduced in a ms line following pollination of inoculated inflorescences with pollen of low viability. The implications of these findings in developing an effective screening technique for smut resistance and in controlling this disease in pearl millet are discussed.

    Structural information from NMR secondary chemical shifts of peptide α C−H protons in proteins (1983)

    Notes: Abstract The secondary chemical shift experienced by the1H-NMR resonances of the α C−H protons in proteins can be correlated with their backbone torsional angles ψ, which dictate the orientation of the α C−H proton to the adjacent carbonyl group. It is shown that α C−H protons present in β-sheet regions experience downfield secondary shifts , whereas those in α-helix regions experience upfield secondary shifts. The predictive use of this correlation in assignment studies is illustrated for the calcium-binding protein paravalbumin, for which a crystal structure is available, and troponin C, for which no crystallographic data are available.

    Notes: Abstract Sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of Nash equilibrium points inN-person games when the strategy sets are closed, convex subsets of reflexive Banach spaces. These conditions require that each player's cost functional is convex in that player's strategy, weakly continuous in the strategies of the other players, weakly lower semicontinuous in all strategies, and furthermore satisfies a coercivity condition if any of the strategy sets is unbounded. The result is applied to a class of linear-quadratic differential games with no information, to prove that equilibrium points exist when the duration of these games is sufficiently small.

    Notes: A simple equation enabling the prediction of the thermal conductivity of plastic foams, without the aid of adjustable parameters, is proposed. The equation is based on a recurrent method, previously developed, that showed reasonable agreement with experimental results. Ways of decreasing the thermal radiation contribution are shown. In particular, the influence of cell size, radiation transmission through solid membranes, and low-emissivity boundary surfaces are analyzed. Errors involved in steady techniques of measuring the thermal conductivity associated with radiation are discussed.

    Notes: The curing reaction of a commercial bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (BADGE) with ethylenediamine (EDA) was studied by differential scanning calorimetry. Different kinetic expressions were found with isothermal (low temperature range) and dynamic (high temperature range) runs. Two competitive mechanisms are shown to be present: an autocatalytic one (activation energy E = 14 kcal/mol) and a noncatalytic path characterized by a second-order reaction with E = 24.5 kcal/mol. At low temperatures both mechanisms took place simultaneously, showing a significant decrease in the reaction rate after the gel point. At high temperatures only the noncatalytic reaction was present, without showing a noticeable rate decrease in the rubber region. Also, a third-order dependence of the glass transition temperature on reaction extent is shown.

    Notes: A model of the manufacture of rigid polyurethane foams by free rising is presented. The extent of cream and rise periods as well as the amount of blowing agent necessary to give the desired foam density are theoretically predicted. The rate of blowing agent evaporation is calculated from an experimental boiling temperature vs. composition curve. Experimental runs were carried out with a formulation consisting of a polymeric isocyanate, a polyether polyol based on sorbitol, a silicone-polyol block-copolymer as surfactant, dibutyltin dilaurate as catalyst, and trichlorofluoromethane as blowing agent. Mixing was performed in situ in the mold using a commercial foaming machine. Experimental results gave a satisfactory agreement with model predictions. A diagram containing all the relevant information may be theoretically built and used for the selection of adequate operating parameters for a given formulation.
