Notes: [Auszug] SIR ? I sympathize with the Indian Government's attempt to lure expatriate scientists and doctors back home through programmes such as TOKTEN and through the proposal to create a sophisticated technological city (Nature 305, 350; 1983). But short-term solutions such as these are not the answers. ...

Notes: Abstract Solar decameter bursts of Type IIIb are observed with a multichannel radiometer at wavelengths around 12m. The time and frequency resolutions were 10 ms and 100 kHz. Observations on the time structure of these bursts are presented. A theoretical model which accounts for various aspects of these bursts is proposed.

Notes: Abstract It is observed that while there exists a strong correlation between the decay constant and the exciter duration for isolated type III radio bursts, it is absent for those type III radio bursts which are preceded by type IIIb radio bursts. A possible theoretical explanation for the presence of correlation in one case and lack of it in the other is proposed.

Notes: Abstract The role of spherulitic crystallization on strength and fracture of the elemental glass-former selenium was investigated. Partially crystallized selenium samples having various sizes and volume fractions of spherulites were obtained by heat-treating amorphous selenium at 62, 82 and 100° C for different lengths of time. The flexure strength of partially crystallized selenium decreases with increasing size of spherulites. Scanning electron microscopy of fractured specimens showed that fracture nucleated in the peripheral regions of the spherulites.

Notes: Abstract Elevated temperature deformation behaviour of alpha-beta brass was investigated by using a model system at temperatures just below the order-disorder transformation temperature (T c) of beta. Although the deformation mode at these temperatues is very similar to that at room temperature, grain boundary sliding in beta becomes an important mode of deformation at low strain rates.

Notes: Abstract Elevated temperature deformation behaviour of alpha-beta brass was investigated by using a model system at temperatures just above the order-disorder transformation temperature (T c) of beta. At low strain-rates, the entire deformation was accompanied by slip in beta and at high strain-rates both alpha and beta deformed by single slip. This mode of deformation is quite different from that observed at temperatures below T c.

Notes: Abstract The deformation behaviour of alpha and beta brass was investigated at temperatures just above and below the ordering temperature of beta. Deformation of beta, unlike alpha, was found to be highly sensitive to temperature and strain-rate. The predominant mode of deformation in beta at temperatures below T c (the ordering temperature) was by grain boundary sliding and at temperatures above T c it was by slip. Furthermore, beta did not exhibit any work-hardening at temperatures above T c. The elevated temperature deformation behaviour of two-phase bicrystals of alpha-beta brass, with inter-phase boundary normal to the tensile axis, depended on the deformation of the individual phases.

Notes: Abstract In an attempt to clarify the fundamental mechanism of material removal in erosion by blunt solid particles entrained in a fluid stream impinging on a solid surface, single crystals of CaF2 (relatively brittle), LiF (intermediate between brittle and ductile), and KCl and NaCl (relatively ductile) were eroded with 0.25 mm glass beads and 0.50 mm quartz sand grains. The velocity of the particles was varied between 2 and 120 m sec−1. Erosion damage was studied with optical and scanning electron microscopy. In the single-impact mode, the damage is highly dependent on the mechanical properties of the target; material spalled off or micromachined out in individual impacts, or as chips produced upon the intersection of fractures resulting from several neighbouring impacts. At normal impact, the predominant mechanism is intersecting fractures, but at impact angles away from the normal, micromachining occurs in NaCl and KCl and, in fact, becomes the major mechanism of material removal. In LiF, only a little micromachining occurs and in CaF2, none at all; hence in these materials spalling is the controlling mechanism for material loss in individual impacts.

Notes: Abstract Tensile testing was carried out at various strain-rates using alpha-beta brass two-phase bicrystal specimens having two types of boundary geometries, currugated and flat. The corrugated boundary was more effective in blocking the propagation of slip from alpha to beta phase. A strain-rate sensitivity was found in all specimens regardless of boundary geometry. At low strain-rate, both boundary types were found to be ineffective barriers to the propagation of slip. At high strain-rates both boundaries fully resisted the passage of deformation. At low strain-rates coarse slip was observed, while at high strain-rates fine slip occurred in the alpha phase.

Notes: Abstract The role of relative crystallographic orientation and grain boundary orientation on crack propagation in LiF bicrystals was investigated by using LiF bicrystals grown by the Czochralski method. Constant compliance specimens were fractured by driving a wedge through notched specimens, and the fracture load was measured using a calibrated load cell. The direction of crack propagation was dictated according to the misorientation angles, and the fracture load was observed to increase as the misorientation angles increased.
