    Notes: Abstract The present study deals with the effect of a single cycle of body accelerations on blood flow in arteries. Such body accelerations are usually caused unintentionally, for example during travel in road vehicles, aircraft or spacecraft. A mathematical model of flow in single arteries subject to a pulsating pressure gradient due to the normal heart action as well as body acceleration expressible in terms of unit functions is presented. The body acceleration is such that it builds up from zero to a maximum value at a uniform rate, remains constant at the maximum value for some time, and thereafter reduces to zero at a uniform rate. The resulting equations are solved by using the technique of Laplace transforms. Computational results are presented for the effects of body accelerations on flow variables namely flow rate, velocity of flow, acceleration and shear stress corresponding to blood flow in the human aorta.

    Notes: Abstract When a human being experiences a sudden velocity change, the blood flow is disturbed. A theoretical analysis to predict the effects of sudden velocity changes on blood flow in large arteries is presented. The situations is modelled as a one-dimensional flow problem in a viscoelastic tube where the fluid viscosity convective term in the equation of motion and nonlinearity in the elastic modulus of the tube wall are neglected. The governing equations of the model are solved by Laplace transformation. The computed results show that relatively high blood pressures, capable of harming circulation, are produced even by relatively moderate velocity jumps.

    Description: SUMMARYA pot culture experiment was conducted on 11 soils differing in their physicochemical characteristics to study the occurrence of Zn-Cu interaction in relation to plant growth and Zn and Cu concentrations of wheat. The nature of the interaction was found to vary with the soils and the amounts of applied nutrients. The plant growth showed antagonistic interaction between Zn and Cu when one of the two elements was added in low amounts. However, when the two elements were applied in large amounts, their concentrations in the plants increased but the plant growth was adversely affected. The applied Zn generally failed to affect the uptake of native or low amounts of applied Cu whereas the applied Cu decreased the uptake of native zinc in five out of 11 soils.The DTPA extractable amounts of Zn in experimental soils were not affected signicantly by Cu application and vice versa. The fact that the application of Zn or Cu may not affect or increase the uptake of each other may depend upon the soil characteristics and the rates of their application.

    Description: SUMMARYNitric phosphates containing 80, 50 and 30% water-soluble phosphorus, and Mussoorie rock phosphate, alone or with Amjhore pyrites, farmyard manure or straw, were compared relative to concentrated superphosphate for each of three cycles of a clusterbean–wheat and a groundnut–wheat rotation. Both the field experiments were made on alkaline P-deficient Samana sands. All phosphatic fertilizers were applied to each crop at the rate of 10, 20 and 30 kg P/ha. Dry forage of clusterbean, groundnut pods and grain yield of wheat were measured. The model of concurrent straight line response was employed to calculate availability coefficient ratios which express the relative effectiveness of the different phosphatic fertilizers.Nitric phosphate containing 80 % water-soluble phosphorus and concentrated superphosphate were almost equal in their effectiveness in both 3-year rotational studies of clusterbean–wheat and groundnut–wheat. The relative efficiency of the nitric phosphates increased with the amount of water-soluble phosphorus they contained. Mussoorie rock phosphate was the least effective source of fertilizer phosphorus, although its efficiency is considerably higher for the legume clusterbean and for groundnut than for the cereal wheat. The efficiency of Mussoorie rock phosphate increased when it was mixed with the soil together with Amjhore pyrites, farmyard manure and straw respectively. These materials were more effective for clusterbean and groundnut than for wheat.
