Notes: Abstract The factorization of two-dimensional spectral functions is a problem of interest in the digital processing of signals because of the nonexistence of a fundamental theorem of algebra for bivariate polynomials. In this paper we consider the special case of rational spectral functions, which are quotients of polynomials or pseudo-polynomials of finite order. We first characterize the general use of asymmetric halfplane factors, and then propose recursive procedures to obtain the factors. In the case of strictly positive spectral functions, we use the homomorphic transform to characterize the causal factor by its first-order data and then apply the modified leastsquares approximation to obtain the rational factors. For those cases of partially characterized spectral functions, we propose extensions of one-dimensional procedures. These alternative procedures are based on the modified least-squares approximation as well as on the two-dimensional Levinson algorithm. All the procedures presented are recursive, thus computationally efficient, and guarantee the stability of the factors in most cases.

Notes: Summary Agonistic displays were studied in the Java Finch. In common with other passerines, supplanting attacks and head-forward displays were observed. However, head-twisting and head-waving as aggressive signals appear to be unique to the species. Backward-waving, another display observed, occurs also in the Cutthroat Finch. Head-twisting, head-waving, and backward-waving are present in juvenile begging postures which have apparently been ritualized and used as aggressive displays by adult Java Finches

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Gesang des Waldbaumläufers(Certhia familiaris) in Kalifornien wurde untersucht.
Notes: Summary Songs of Brown-Creepers(Certhia familiaris) in California were studied. Each individual usually sang one theme. Two geographic groups of songs were described which were designated the northern and southern dialects. These songs differed in the morphology of the introductory and terminal syllables. The northern dialect is currently known to extend from Point Reyes to the City of San Francisco, and includes birds from east San Francisco Bay. The southern dialect ranges from Carmel and Point Lobos to Morro Bay. Birds from the Hastings Reservation, 30 miles inland, sang the southern dialect. Creepers on Angel Island exhibited the “typical” island phenomenon of simpler structure but greater individual variability. We suggested that lack of social interaction due to dispersed habitat has contributed to these song changes. California Creeper songs are more variable with regard to note sequencing than those of their European congeners.

Notes: Abstract Starting from a first-order formulation of the Lagrangian of noninteracting massless helicity-2 and helicity-3/2 particles, we deduce global supersymmetry transformations. Then, allowing the supersymmetry transformations to become local requires, if supersymmetry is to be maintained, the introduction of a unique primitive interaction through the “gravitino” stress tensor and torsion. Finally, the imposition of exact supersymmetry invariance leads by a short, constructive process to full supergravity and the complete form of the supersymmetry transformations. In particular, no explicit use is made of general coordinate invariance, and the self-consistency of the gravitational coupling emerges from the local supersymmetry requirement alone.

Notes: Abstract A calculation of the quantum mechanical propagator for a general time-dependent one-dimensional damped, forced harmonic oscillator based on a direct application of the Schwinger action principle is presented. Contact with an earlier general method of calculation is made and in particular two previously found results are recovered from our general expression. The apparent dependence of one of them upon some unphysical parameters is clarified. The method presented here can be applied to any system described by a quadratic Hamiltonian and is an immediate extension of the calculation for the propagator of a simple harmonic oscillator with constant frequency.
