Notes: Summary A comparative study of adverse drug reactions (ADR) leading to hospital admission showed that 103 (4.1%) out of 2499 medical admissions in Jerusalem and 167 (5.7%) out of 2933 admissions in Berlin were due to such reactions. Sex distribution in the two patient — populations was almost equal but the Jerusalem patients were younger. The most frequent ADRs were digitalis intoxication (in Berlin) and reactions to antibiotics (in Jerusalem). Other important differences were noted in the relative frequencies of ADRs associated anticoagulants, hypoglycemic agents and oral contraceptives. They were probably related to differences in drug usage in the two countries. The most common major side effects were arrhythmias, allergic reactions, bleeding, congestive heart failure, bronchospasm and hypoglycemia. The following risk factors were identified in both cities: old age, female sex, impaired renal function, previous history of ADR and polypragmasia.

Notes: Summary Platelet aggregation and thromboxane A2 (TXA2) production induced by arachidonic acid and collagen were studied in 10 healthy volunteers prior to and at various times after the oral administration of a single dose of 1 g dipyrone. The plasma concentrations of four dipyrone metabolites were also determined. Dipyrone inhibited platelet aggregation and markedly decreased TXA2 synthesis induced by threshold concentrations of both agonists. Maximal inhibition was noted 1 hour after drug administration and in some subjects it lasted as long as 72 h. At all times the effect of the drug could be abolished by increasing the concentration of the agonist. This is consistant with a competitive inhibitory effect of dipyrone on prostaglandin synthetase activity. The mean plasma concentration of the main dipyrone metabolite methylaminoantipyrine at 1 h was 11 µg/ml. There was no correlation between individual plasma levels and the parameters of platelet function. At 24 h the mean concentration of each of the metabolites studied was up to 1 µg/ml, and these levels, too, did not correlate with the biological effect of the drug.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of the dipyrone metabolites 4-methylaminoantipyrine (MAA), 4-aminoantipyrine (AA), 4-formylaminoantipyrine (FAA) and 4-acetylaminoantipyrine (AAA) were evaluated following the administration of a single oral 1.0 g dose of dipyrone to 23 healthy volunteers. Twelve were slow and 11 were rapid acetylators as previously determined by dapsone phenotyping. For MAA and FAA the mean peak plasma concentrations were 10.5±2.8 µg/ml and 2.1±0.8 µg/ml and the half-lives were 3.3±1.0 and 10.1±1.8 h, respectively. No significant difference was found between rapid and slow acetylators in MAA and FAA kinetics. For AA, the mean peak plasma concentrations were 2.7±0.6 and 1.6±0.7 µg/ml (p〈0.01), the peak times 6.7±2.1 and 3.1±1.1 h (p〈0.01) and the half-lives were 5.5±1.0 and 3.8±1.2 h in slow and rapid acetylators, respectively. For AAA, the mean peak plasma concentrations were 1.6±0.4 and 4.4±1.1 µg/ml (p〈0.01) and the peak time 16.1±5.1 and 10.0±2.6 h (p〈0.01) in slow and rapid acetylators, respectively. There was no difference in the elimination half-life between the two groups (10.6±2.2 h). Thus, it has been demonstrated that the AAA/AA ratio is an indicator of the acetylation phenotype, as it is closely correlated with that determined by dapsone (r=0.895, p〈0.0005).

Notes: Abstract Magnetization curves for a polycrystalline specimen of ErRh4B4 are analyzed to estimate the paramagnetic contribution to the Gibbs free energy as well as the differences in free energy between the superconducting and normal states. These results are compared with the theoretical predictions of a suitably constrained model based on Ginzburg-Landau theory for magnetic superconductors.

Notes: We report on the continuous magnetization curves of a single crystal of vanadium having a resistivity ratio of 25. Our method is based on the electronic integration of the difference signal induced across two identical coils, one of which contains the specimen, as the external magnetic field is cycled over the operating range. The magnetization curves are analyzed to obtain the values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameters κ1 and κ2 as functions of temperature. The lower and upper critical fields as well as the thermodynamic critical field are also given as functions of temperature. The experimental data are compared with the theoretical calculations of Eilenberger and others.

Notes: Ionizing radiation was employed to graft bromostyrene (BSy) onto poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabric. The fire-retardant effect of the polymerized monomer on PET fabric was evaluated both by LOI tests and by DTA and TGA methods under conditions of controlled total combustion. The yields of HBr and BSy evolved during pyrolysis in the presence and absence of oxygen were determined. A linear correlation was found between ΔOI values and yields of HBr, and the implications of this finding are discussed. It is suggested on the strength of DTA and TGA results under total combustion conditions that the fire-retardant effect of poly(bromostyrene) manifests itself mainly by a physical-mode mechanism through a significant reduction in the release of flammable gases.

Notes: An instrument for measuring the force of adhesion between intraocular lens materials and the endothelium of excised rabbit corneas was constructed. The adhesion force was measured for polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polyhydroxyethylmethacrylate (PHEMA), Duragel (amino-polyamide hydrogel), PMMA surface grafted with polyvinylpyrolidone, and PMMA surface treated with sodium hyaluronate (Healon). The force of adhesion was reduced considerably when the PMMA surface was modified with a hydrophilic polymer coating. This is consistent with previous studies showing reduced endothelium cell damage for hydrophilic polymer coated intraocular lenses. Adhesive forces were also decreased by addition of polyvinyl alcohol or gelatin to the saline solution in which the corneas were immersed. Extension of this type of measurement to pericardium, vascular endothelium, and peritoneum surfaces may also be important to understand tissue damage problems in general surgery.
