Notes:
Summary A procedure for the determination of Tl is proposed, using the luminescence generated by Tl(III) in an alkaline solution of luminol. Tl(I) is oxidized to Tl(III) by bromine in sulphuric acid. The excess bromine is reduced by sodium formiate. Sodium phosphate is added. The thus prepared sample is injected into the cell of a luminometer, containing luminol in a sodium phosphate solution. The maximum of the luminescence is evaluated. The time required for the procedure is about 5 min. The detection limit is 100 ppb Tl(I). The calibration function is linear in the 1–10 ppm range. The standard deviation for 1 ppm Tl(I) is 7 %, using a 200 μl sample.
