    Description: In order to produce networks for PANAIR, the user is greatly aided by a geometry package that will produce networks in the correct format. Although the best solution to this problem is the use of a suitably modified computer-aided design system, a collection of programs has been written to allow the user with a small-scale computer to generate networks that represent configurations of considerable generality. This repertoire of programs enables users of PANAIR to create networks with a minimum of effort and should increase the overall usefulness of the PANAIR program.

    Description: The benefits of computer graphics in design are discussed, with particular reference to aerospace applications. The evolution of computer graphics is illustrated by the following examples: solid lines representing the edges of solid geometric parts; graphics with colored lines providing better descriptions of a variety of objects, such as circuit boards, maps, and complete aircraft; graphics with colored surfaces mapping such information as heating rates and pressures on aircraft; and color mapping combined with shading. Finally, examples are given of complex flow fields and scenes showing many objects that are displayed dynamically, with transparency used to clarify these scenes.

    Description: The benefits of using computer graphics in design are briefly reviewed. It is shown that computer graphics substantially aids productivity by permitting errors in design to be found immediately and by greatly reducing the cost of fixing the errors and the cost of redoing the process. The possibilities offered by computer-generated displays in terms of information content are emphasized, along with the form in which the information is transferred. The human being is ideally and naturally suited to dealing with information in picture format, and the content rate in communication with pictures is several orders of magnitude greater than with words or even graphs. Since science and engineering involve communicating ideas, concepts, and information, the benefits of computer graphics cannot be overestimated.

    Description: PAN AIR is a computer program that predicts subsonic or supersonic linear potential flow about arbitrary configurations. The code's versatility and generality afford numerous possibilities for modeling flow problems. Although this generality provides great flexibility, it also means that studies are required to establish the dos and don'ts of modeling. The purpose of this paper is to describe and evaluate a variety of methods for modeling flows with PAN AIR. The areas discussed are effects of panel density, internal flow modeling, forebody modeling in subsonic flow, propeller slipstream modeling, effect of wake length, wing-tail-wake interaction, effect of trailing-edge paneling on the Kutta condition, well- and ill-posed boundary-value problems, and induced-drag calculations. These nine topics address problems that are of practical interest to the users of PAN AIR.

    Description: PANAIR uses high-order panel method to predict inviscid subsonic or supersonic flows about arbitrary configuration. Panel method solves linear partial differential equation numerically by approximating configuration surface with panels on which unknown "singularity strengths" are defined. PANAIR includes advanced software technology as well as advanced aerodynamic technology.

    Description: PAN AIR is a computer program for predicting subsonic or supersonic linear potential flow about arbitrary configurations. It uses linear source and quadratic doublet strength distributions. These higher-order distributions have been implemented in a manner that greatly reduces the numerical stability problems that have plagued earlier attempts to make surface paneling methods work successfully for supersonic flow. PAN AIR's problem-solving capability, numerical approach, modeling features, and program architecture are described. Numerical results are presented for a variety of geometries at supersonic Mach numbers.
