Notes: Summary In male rosefinches (Carpodacus erythrinus) 12 h non-stimulatory photoperiods (12L∶12D) were as effective in stimulating testicular recrudescence, as were long photoperiods (18L∶6D) when presented as several intermittent symmetrical photoperiods. The results are discussed with regard to the hypothesis that photoperiodic effects in birds are mediated by circadian rhythms.

Notes: Summary 1. Receptive fields and response latencies of dark adapted ‘on’ type interneurons in the optic lobe ofPeriplaneta americana were measured by determining threshold intensities of light flashes from stationary points. Markings of electrode position showed that recording sites were mainly in the medulla neuropil and external chiasma though some marks were found in the lamina neuropil and lobula. 2. Receptive fields of these cells depended strongly on the criterion used in their description. Sufficiently intense stimuli were effective in almost any part of the visual field. Considering only the most effective regions (within 0.5 log of maximum) it was found that most fields were less than 90° in their largest dimension (93%), were elliptical in shape (77%), and were in the anterior portion of the visual field (82%). Other characteristics are described and compared. 3. In about half of the cells tested appropriately it was found that fields measured with violet stimuli were generally larger and dorsally shifted (by at least 30°) than those measured with green stimuli (Fig. 3). 4. The mean minimum latency for 508 nm stimuli was 66 ms (S.D.=21ms) and the mean maximum latency was 135 ms (S.D.=40.5 ms). Two cells (not included in mean) had minimum latencies of 500 ms and maximum latencies of 600 ms and 650 ms, respectively. The mean latency to 410 nm stimuli at threshold was significantly longer than for 508 nm (mean of 431 ms, S.D.=93.3 ms) and was as long as 1,300 ms for one of the two cells with long minimum latencies. There appeared to be no strict relation between latency values and stimulus location or the cell's sensitivity to the stimulus. Comparison of latency vs. intensity functions and receptor potential rise times indicates that at least some of the wavelength dependence arises in the behavior of the retinal elements. 5. A particular cell's sensitivity to a given stimulus point occasionally increases when a portion of the receptor complement is shielded from that point and green stimuli are employed. Such increases are very rarely seen when violet stimuli are employed. It is hypothesized that the green receptors of the retina participate in a lateral inhibitory network while the UV receptors do not.

Notes: Summary Response of dwarf wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em Thell) to three different levels of water stress at three growth stages — seeding to maximum tillering, maximum tillering to flowering and flowering to maturity, was studied under field conditions for two seasons. At each of these three stages, plants were subject to three ratios of irrigation water to cumulative pan evaporation (IW/CPE) −0.45, 0.60 and 0.75. During the remaining stages the plants were irrigated with an IW/CPE ratio of 0.9. Thus mild, moderate and severe stress treatments were compared with a no-stress control. At all stages moderate and severe water stress decreased plant height, leaf area, ear number, 1000-grain weight, grain yield and water-use efficiency. In stage 3 the effect of water stress on straw yield was not marked. Wheat was most sensitive to water stress during stage 1 when the reduction in grain yield was caused by a reduction in numbers of ears and grains per ear. In stage 2, grain yield reduction was due to fewer grains perear and a lower 1000-grain weight. On rewatering, mild stressed plants showed recovery of plant height, tiller number and in consequence, yield. Results indicate that under the conditions of this study the wheat crop should be irrigated at a IW/CPE ratio of 0.75 when water resources are limited. With an unlimited water supply the ratio may be increased to 1.2 in stage 2 to maximise the yield.

Notes: Summary Boreostrongylus romerolagi n.sp. is described and figured from the duodenum of Romerolagus diazi collected in Mexico and which died in the Zoological Gardens, Antwerp. It is distinguished from the two nearest species of the genus B. kinsellai and B. dalrymplei by the size of the genital cone, the branching of the dorsal ray and the shorter spicules. ac]19790718

Notes: Abstract In an attempt to improve the specificity of the crudeTaenia saginata antigen for the immunodiagnosis of bovine cysticercosis, a major and highly immunogenic fraction (F10), responsible for the formation of the typical “long band” reaction in immunoelectrophoresis, has been isolated fromT. saginata proglottides by immunoaffinity chromatography. The immunoadsorbant was prepared by coupling a specifically raised hyperimmune serum (HIS) anti-F10 to Sepharose 4B. The purity of the isolated F10 was demonstrated by immunoprecipitation reactions. The HIS anti-F10, however, cross-reacted with several larval and adultTaenia spp. Consequently, F10 showed cross-reactions with the sera of animals infected with hydatid cysts or larvalT. hydatigena. F10 also reacted with HIS anti-F5 (Echinococcus granulosus) but was shown to be non-identical with the well known F5 ofE. granulosus. These data prove that F10 ofT. saginata was not species-specific but showed a group specificity for the taeniid family — a situation analogous to F5 ofE. granulosus.

Notes: Rabbits were immunized against their alloantigens extracted from the sperm acrosome. The sequential method of extraction, first by MgCl2 then by detergents, provided the plasma and outer acrosomal membranes and their contents in the first step and the inner acrosomal membrane and its components in the next step. Both groups of antigens appear to have produced monospecific antisera. The MgCl2 extract antiserum lost its sperm immobilization and agglutination activities on absorption to its antigen. The detergent extract, under similar treatment, remained unaffected. Therefore, the agglutination and immobilization factors resided on the plasma membrane. The decrease in sperm concentration suggested that the immunogen affected the germinal epithelium. The reduction in the semen volume and seminal enzymes seems to indicate that the accessory sex glands were also affected by the treatment. The antiserum blocked the dissolution of the hamster and rabbit zona pellucida by the MgCl2 extract. The normal serum had no such effect. Both the normal and immune sera inhibited acrosin equally well while the antisera inhibited other proteinases, arylsulfatase, and β-N-acetylhexosaminidase to a significantly greater extent. Immunized rabbits failed to impregnate females as long as the antibody titer remained high. As the titer declined these animals became fertile and the females delivered normal litters.

Notes: The cis-trans isomerization of polybutadiene double bonds during metathesis degradation using WCl6/(CH3)4Sn catalyst system has been estimated kinetically along with productive metathesis. The isomerization was followed both for noncrosslinked and for crosslinked polybutadiene. Ninety-six percent cis-1, 4 units are found to isomerize into ca. 75% trans-1, 4 units. The rate of stereomutation is found to be different in the presence and absence of a low-molecular-weight olefin. The results are explained with the help of a stereo model originally proposed by Katz (Advances in Organometallic Chemistry, Academic, New York, 1977, Vol. 16.)
