Description: Low dispersion spectrum observations are analyzed. The light curve of nova Cr A, indicating a moderately fast nova, is presented. Flux calibrated, merged spectrum graphs of April 21, 1981 and September 13, 1981 are presented, demonstrating very strong lines of Al and Si. Additional strong C, Ni, O, and Ne emission lines were identified. Emission lines due to highly ionized species such as Mg VII and Al Vl were observed for short times in May and June 1981. Preliminary analysis of spectra obtained 200 days after maximum indicate that the nebula is still in transition and has not yet reached the nebula state. An over abundance of N and Ne are suggested.

Description: The computer program known as PLOTRW was custom made to satisfy some of the graphics requirements for the data collected in the Space Plasma Laboratory at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). The general requirements for the program were as follows: (1) all subroutines shall be callable through a FORTRAN source program; (2) all graphs shall fill one page and be properly labeled; (3) there shall be options for linear axes and logarithmic axes; (4) each axis shall have tick marks equally spaced with numeric values printed at the beginning tick mark and at the last tick mark; and (5) there shall be three options for plotting. These are: (1) point plot, (2) line plot and (3) point-line plot. The subroutines were written in FORTRAN IV for the LSI-11 Digital equipment Corporation (DEC) Computer. The program is now operational and can be run on any TEKTRONICX graphics terminal that uses a DEC Real-Time-11 (RT-11) operating system.

Description: Sparse, granular inclusions of early-formed minerals found within the Little Glass Mountain rhyolite flows in northern California are shown to provide a means of characterizing the physical conditions, at depth, beneath the Medicine Lake Highland during the latest phase of volcanic activity. Mineral compositions, in combination with thermodynamic calculations and experiments, suggest crystalization at a pressure of 5,200 bars within a 966-836 C temperature range; implying that mineral segregation and equilibration occurred at a depth of 15-18 km beneath the surface. In addition, mass balance calculations indicate that the Medicine Lake flow is a close approximation to the parental magma for the latest silicic lavas.

Description: A series of ultraviolet spectra were obtained of the recurrent nova U Sco during its recent outburst with the IUE satellite. These spectra were analyzed and found to consist primarily of emission lines although broad resonance absorption is present during the first week. These data, in combination with the optical data, show that the nova ejecta is very depleted in hydrogen relative to helium and is rich in nitrogen. An optical spectrum, obtained nine months after the outburst, shows predominantly He II emission lines, indicating that the gas being transferred from the secondary is very helium rich and that the secondary is highly evolved. These data are interpreted to imply that the outburst is associated with the accretion of helium rich material by a massive white dwarf in a close binary system. Neither the observational data nor the theoretical calculations, permit differentiation between a thermonuclear runway or an accretion event as the cause of the outburst. In both cases, an equal amount of material is ejected at equal speeds.

Description: Changes of the geometry of the open field line region (namely, the polar cap) caused by the passage of a tangential IMF discontinuity are simulated using the model constructed by Akasofu and Roederer (1983). A singly-bounded open field line region tends to split into two, forming a narrow closed field line region and thus allowing the formations of a plasma sheet and of an auroral arc across the highest latitude region of the earth. The three-dimensional geometry of some of the closed field lines in the narrow closed region is examined. In this connection, an interesting observation of the formation of an auroral arc over Thule, Greenland, is reported.

Description: The injection molding behavior of a concentrated suspension of Si powder in wax was studied. It was found that the injection molding behavior was a function of the processing techniques used to generate the powder. Dry ball-milled powders had the best molding behavior, while air classified and impact-milled powders demonstrated poorer injection moldability. The relative viscosity of these molding batches was studied as a function of powder properties: distribution shape, surface area, packing density, and particle morphology. The experimental behavior, in all cases, followed existing theories. The relative viscosity of an injection molding composition composed of dry ball-milled powders could be expressed using Farris' relation.

Description: The surface of a moderate band gap semiconductor such as p-type molybdenum sulfide is modified to contain an adherent film of charge mediating ionene polymer containing an electroactive unit such as bipyridimium. Electron transport between the electrode and the mediator film is favorable and photocorrosion and recombination processes are suppressed. Incorporation of particles of catalyst such as platinum within the film provides a reduction in overvoltage. The polymer film is readily deposited on the electrode surface and can be rendered stable by ionic or addition crosslinking. Catalyst can be predispersed in the polymer film or a salt can be impregnated into the film and reduced therein.

Description: The type and quantity of lunar materials needed to support a space power satellite program was used to define the type and quality of geological information required to certify a site for exploitation. The existing geological, geochemical, and geophysical data are summarized. The difference between these data and the required data for exploitation is used to define program requirements. Most of these requirements involve linear extensions of existing capabilities, fuller utilization of existing data, or expanded use of automated systems.

Description: Details are given for the construction and operation of a 101.3 KN/sq meter (1 atmosphere) redox control system. A solid ceramic oxygen electrolyte cell is used to monitor the oxygen fugacity in the furnace. The system consists of a vertical quench gas mixing furnace with heads designed for mounting the electrolyte cell and with facilities for inserting and removing the samples, a simplified version of a gas mixing apparatus, and devices for experiments under controlled rates of change of temperature. A thermogravimetric analysis system employing these techniques of redox control and measurement is also described. The calibration and maintenance of the system are discussed.

Description: Estimation procedures are described for measuring component failure rates, for comparing the failure rates of two different groups of components, and for formulating confidence intervals for testing hypotheses (based on failure rates) that the two groups perform similarly or differently. Appendix A contains an example of an analysis in which these methods are applied to investigate the characteristics of two groups of spacecraft components. The estimation procedures are adaptable to system level testing and to monitoring failure characteristics in orbit.
