Notes: The paper identifies the disturbances in the balance of payments of the non-oil less developed countries responsible for the rapid growth in their external debt between 1972 and 1977. It also examines prospects for the future. It finds that the sharp growth in the current account deficits in the years 1974 and 1975 was due primarily to adverse movements in the terms of trade. But trade terms were reversed in 1976 and 1977 and the deficit was reduced. Still overall inflation, slow export growth, and large interest payments kept the deficit substantially above the 1972 and earlier levels. In part II the paper examines how the debt to GNP ratio of the LDC's could be affected by four factors: export growth, changes in real interest rates, terms of trade, and credit rationing. A model is developed which shows that certain combinations of the four factors could lead to rapid accumulation of debt relative to GNP.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the experimental investigation of stimulated Raman scattering obtained from a multimode fiber. 10 orders of stimulated Stokes scattering of wavelengths in the 546–702 nm region were obtained from a 480m multimode, low-loss, graded-index quartz fiber pumped by a 532 nm frequency-doubled YAG-Nd laser beam with a pulse duration of 7 ns, output power of 0.7 MW and repetition rates of 5 and 10 pps.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the subregion generalized variational principle for elastic thick plates is proposed. Its main points may be stated as follows: 1. Each subregion may be assigned arbitrarily as a potential region or complementary region. The subregion variational principles of potential energy, complementary energy and mixed energy represent three special forms of this principle. 2. The number of independent variational variables in each subregion may be assigned arbitrarily. Any one of the subregions may be assigned, as a one-variable-region, two-variable-region or three-variable-region. 3. The conjunction conditions of displacements and stresses on each interline of neighbouring subregions may be relaxed. On the basis of this principle the finite element analysis of non-conforming elements for thick plates can be formulated. Different finite element models for thick plates can be obtained by different applications of this principle. In particular, the subregion mixed variational principle for thick plates may be applied to formulating the subregion mixed finite element method for thick plates.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, problems of a shallow spherical shell with circular base under eccentrically applied concentrated loads are discussed. The solutions for six cases of eccentrically applied concentrated loads are given, namely: (1) Normal concentrated load, (2) Meridional tangential concentrated load, (3) Circumferential tangential concentrated load, (4) Concentrated moment in the tangential plane, (5) Concentrated moment in the meridional normal plane, (6) Concentrated moment in the circumferential normal plane. From the solutions of concentrated loads, the solutions of distributed line loads in the form of cosnθ along the circle are obtained.

Notes: Methods are described for the determination of diallylphthalate monomer and pendant allyl contents in homopolymers of diallylphthalate. The monomer content was determined by gel permeation chromatography. The total allyl content was determined by FTIR and computer subtraction of solvent spectrum. The pendent allyl content can be calculated from the difference between total allyl and allyl caused by monomer. Determination of both monomer and pendant allyl content in the prepolymer is essential for accurate prediction of the physical properties of the cured polymer.

Notes: Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is used to determine the cure rate of an epoxy resin consisting of Tetraglycidyl-4,4′-diaminodiphenyl methane (TGDDM) and diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS). Cure rates at 120 and 160°C are shown to increase noticeably when 1% BF3-MEA is added to either TGDDM to TGDDM plus DDS. Fluoroboric acid is shown to increase the cure rates even more than the BF3-MEA. These Results combined with the NMR results in the accompanying article indicate that BF3-MEA is not a catalyst for epoxy resin cure. Instead it is rapidly hydrolyzed to fluoroboric acid which acts as the catalyst.

Notes: Acetyl sulfate was used as sulfonating agent for the sulfonation of cis-1,4-polyisoprene. IR and NMR spectra showed that the sulfonation was accompanied by extensive cyclization. A series of DSC and loss tangent studies of both the sodium salts and the methyl esters was undertaken. It was found that cyclization exerts a profound influence on the micrbrownian segmental motion of the hydrocarbon matrix and is the dominant factor in raising the glass transition temperatures. However, the differences in the mechanical properties between salts and esters suggest that the presence of ions does influence the melt viscosities and shear moduli of the sulfonated cyclized rubbers; this influence can be minimized by esterification or water absorption. It is seen that the ionic effects in these materials are quite typical of those encountered in a wide range of other ionomers.
