Beschreibung: Requirements for an improved aviation weather system are defined and specifically include the need for (1) weather observations at all airports with instrument approaches, (2) more accurate and timely radar detection of weather elements hazardous to aviation, and (3) better methods of timely distribution of both pilot reports and ground weather data. The development of the discrete address beacon system data link, Doppler weather radar network, and various information processing techniques are described.

Beschreibung: The problem is to operate on two scalar fields to produce a vector field, to produce user products from the vector field, and to establish reliability of results. Data problems encountered include sparse measurements, irregular distribution, varying quality, imperfect orthogonality, aliasing due to sampling volume, and measurements not simultaneous. Desired algorithm characteristics, solution elements, and characteristics of the model are listed. The seven simulation elements, eight algorithm steps and the required user inputs are given.

Beschreibung: Vector windspeed measurements in a horizontal plane are derived from an airborne Doppler lidar. Error correction has improved so that those which remain do not affect local flow analysis. This allows measurements of wave structures in and near the boundary layer. Deep boundary layer measurements show pronounced interacting wave structures. Wave structures were also observed to result from obstacle flow.

Beschreibung: Vertical atmospheric sounder data were evaluated. Basic work thus far has been directed toward evaluating, over the in near real time to determine the instrument's ability to detect regions with potential for severe storm development. A real time hourly water vapor loop 16 hours daily provides data to monitor position and trends of mid and upper level meteorological features. Because water vapor is more uniform than clouds, the water vapor images improve the ability to monitor certain atmospheric features such as jets, shortwaves, vorticity centers, and subsidence zones. Additional products to be evaluated include a version of the split window developed by NASA and cloud drift winds generated from three hourly sequenced CO2 VAS channels. A technique also under evaluation at NSSFC provides hail size potential based on VAS sounding data. Part of a planned upgrade to CSIS linking the 9600 baud phone line to one of the CSIS CPUs to allow access to VAS data via CSIS.

Beschreibung: The objectives of this work are: (1) to extend the technique of direct numerical simulations to turbulent, chemically reacting flows, (2) to test the validity of the method by comparing computational results with laboratory data, and (3) to use the simulations to gain a better understanding of the effects of turbulence on chemical reactions. The effects of both the large scale structure and the smaller scale turbulence on the overall reaction rates are addressed. The relationship between infinite reaction rate and finite reaction rate chemistry is compared with some of the results of calculations with existing theories and laboratory data. The direct numerical simulation method involves the numerical solution of the detailed evolution of the complex turbulent velocity and concentration fields. Using very efficient numerical methods (e.g., pseudospectral methods), the fully nonlinear (possibly low pass filtered) equations of motion are solved and no closure assumptions or turbulence models are used. Statistical data are obtained by performing spatial, temporal, and/or ensemble averages over the computed flow fields.

Beschreibung: The severe weather characteristics of convective storms as observed by the Nimbus 7 Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) are investigated. Low 37 GHz brightness temperatures (due to scattering of upwelling radiation by precipitation size ice) are related to the occurrence of severe weather (large hail, strong winds or wind damage, tornadoes and funnel clouds) within one hour of the satellite observation time. During 1979 and 1980 over the United States there were 263 storms which had very cold 37 GHz signatures. Of these storms 15% were severe. The SMMR detected hail, wind, and tornadic storms equally well. Critical Success Indices (CSI's) of 0.32, 0.48, and 0.38 are achieved for the thresholding of severe vs. nonsevere low brightness temperature events during 1979, 1980, and the two years combined, respectively. Such scores are comparable to skill scores for early radar detection methods. These results suggest that a future geostationary passive microwave imaging capability at 37 GHz, with sufficient spatial and temporal resolution, would allow the detection of severe convective storms. This capability would provide a useful complement to radar, especially in areas not covered by radar.

Beschreibung: Three dimensional combustor calculations are currently stretching the computer hardware capabilities and the computing budgets of gas turbine manufacturers. One of the main reasons for this relates to the large number of complex physical processes occurring in the combustor. Airflow, fuel spray, reaction kinetics, flame radiation, and not the least of which, turbulence must be modeled and the related differential equations solved. Discussions in this conference will address methods to improve the accuracy of combustor flow field calculations and methods to speed the convergence of the modeled equations. This report will focus on aspects of merging these two new technologies. The improved accuracy discretization schemes have a negative impact on the speed of convergence of the modeled equations that the improved solution algorithms may not overcome. A description of the causes of this problem and potential solutions will be examined.

Beschreibung: The strongly implicit procedure of Stone is used to obtain numerical solutions of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in conservative form. In contrast to the spatially split Douglas-Gunn type methods, the method is shown to be numerically stable for the three-dimensional wave equation. The method is applied to a variety of external and internal two-dimensional flow problems involving shock wave boundary-layer interaction for both laminar and turbulent flows. The results are in good agreement with other methods and/or experiments. The storage penalty associated with the method is discussed and a simple, yet effective, means of minimizing the problem is presented.
