    Notes: This paper is concerned with the solution of the three-dimensional potential problem for electromagnetic river gauging. It extends previous ideas of joining finite elements in an interior region to one infinite external element treated by the boundary integral method1,2 to this case where there are two external infinite elements representing the river and the ground. The boundary continuity conditions on the infinite river-ground interface, as well as the internal-external interfaces, are dealt with by introducing a variational principle with relaxed continuity requirement3.

    Notes: This paper shows that the ‘streamline upwinding’ proposed by Hughes and Brooks1 is particularly simple to implement with the coupled nonlinear equations of the problem of salt water intrusion in a coastal aquifer. Because the mechanical dispersion effect is far larger than the molecular diffusion, the notorious spurious oscillations can be controlled by limiting the ratio of grid size to the streamline mixing length. The method is demonstrated on an example of a typical aquifer by giving the diagnostic variation of concentration and various salt profiles for different values of the key parameter.

    Notes: This paper discusses the Bossak-Newmark algorithm, which is an extension of the well-known Newmark algorithm1 for the numerical integration of the equations of discretized structural dynamics problems. The extra parameter introduced here enables the method (when used on the test equation ẍ = -ω2x) to be simultaneously second order, unconditionally stable and with positive artificial damping.Comparisons are made with another modification of Newmark introduced by Hilber, Hughes and Taylor2.

    Notes: This paper shows that it is comparatively simple to analyse algorithms for the numerical integration of the Space discretized equations from structural dynamics when applied to \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$\ddot x + \mu \dot x\omega ^2 x = p{\rm e}^{ist} $\end{document}, instead of the usual \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \ddot x + \omega ^2 x = 0 $\end{document}, and suggests that this should be done in order to gain some insight into the effect with natural damping and/or a periodic forcing term. The method is illustrated on some three- and four-time-level schemes.
