Notes: Kinetic data are reported for the fast polymerization of a thermoplastic polyurethane under conditions similar to that of commercial reaction injection molding (RIM). The components were a 2000 molecular weight polyester polyol, butanediol and 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate. Three catalysts-dibutyltin dilaurate, phenyl mercuric propionate, and triethylenediamine-as well as uncatalyzed formulations were studied. Kinetic parameters were obtained by numerically fitting adiabatic temperature rise data with both second-order and hyperbolic models. The hyperbolic model gave consistently better fits and is supported by mechanistic studies in the literature. Activation energies compare well to literature values. The uncatalyzed rate was found to be significant. The kinetic parameters obtained by this method are useful measures of catalyst performance in the RIM systems. Moreover, the models provide a conveient way to predict the extent of reaction during the production of parts by the RIM process. The shape of the reaction pathway (extent of reaction time) may be important in the development of physical properties of polymers produced by the RIM process. Physical properties for these samples compare favorably to those for a conventionally produced (batch) polyurethane of the same formulation.

Notes: The development of heterogeneous structure during the polymerization of a polyurethane system using a polyether diol of M̄n = 2000 as the soft segment and 4,4′-diphenylmethane disocyanate extended with 1,4-butanediol as the hard segment was monitored following the amount of light transmitted by the sample and the increase in viscosity of the reacting mixture. The amount of light transmitted by the reacting sample was observed to decrease sharply at a given point in the reaction. The cloud point was taken as the onset of phase separation in the system and the number average sequence at this point was found to be fairly constant at about 1.3 independent of reaction temperature and system composition. In many cases, the cloud point occurred at quite low conversion, meaning that a significant amount of subsequent polymerization occurs in a heterogeneous medium. It was also found that the viscosity of the material reached very large values at partial conversions of the monomers and presented throughout the reaction values larger than those expected from an increase in molecular weight alone. Viscosity is apparently sensitive to a different aspect of the phase separation process than the light transmission.

Notes: It is shown how using the relevant dimensionless groups for the RIM process, guidelines for premature gelling, and knit line problems can be achieved. The influence of processing conditions on final plaque physical properties is analyzed. It is shown that RIM parts, due to the fact that most of the polymerization reaction occurs after the mold is filled, are fairly isotropic with respect to planar rotations parallel to the mold walls.
