    Notes: A linear form of the mass balance equation is used to determine how turbulent transport of mass to a solid wall is related to the fluctuating velocity field. It is found that at high Schmidt numbers the Reynolds transport is controlled by fluctuations of much lower frequency than the most energetic velocity fluctuations. The characteristic of the velocity field that emerges as being most important is the small frequency limiting value of the spectral function of the velocity fluctuations normal to the wall. However, the linear theory that is explored does not predict the correct dependency of the average and the mean-squared deviation of the mass transfer coefficient on Schmidt number. A nonlinear analysis must be performed to examine fully the mechanism of turbulent mass transfer to a solid surface.

    Notes: The relation between the velocity and concentration fields for a fully developed turbulent flow which transfers mass to a pipe wall at large Schmidt numbers has been studied. Measurements of the fluctuations of the concentration gradient and the velocity gradient were obtained simultaneously at multiple locations on the wall. Spatial scales were calculated for the low frequency velocity fluctuations by passing the measured signals through low-pass filters. These scales are the same size as the scales of the concentration fluctuations. This result provides additional support for the notion that mass transfer to a boundary at high Schmidt numbers in controlled by low frequency velocity fluctuations which contain only a small fraction of the total turbulent energy.

    Notes: The dual sorption theory has been extended to the transport of drug molecules through human skin in vitro. By assuming that sorption of drug molecules occurs by both dissolution and binding of drug to immobile sites in the skin, the experimental sorption isotherm can be predicted, and the disparity between steady state and time lag diffusivities can be reconciled. Furthermore, the dual sorption model has been used to develop techniques for controlling these sorption transport processes in order to rapidly achieve predictable transdermal drug delivery in vivo.

Diese Thematik wurde von Misra et al.1 kürzlich untersucht, und ihre Ansichten werden hier diskutiert. Wir schlagen vor, daß einige Effekte, die sie auf Restspannung zurückführen, besser durch die molekulare Orientierung erklärt werden.
    Notes: Injection mouldings contain residual stress and molecular orientation and both are influential in determining properties. When a fibrous filler is present the magnitude and distribution of residual stress and molecular orientation are modified and, with semi crystalline polymer matrices, the crystal morphology is also modified. This subject has been studied recently by Misra et al.1 and their views are discussed here. We propose that some of the effects they attribute to residual stress are better explained with reference to molecular orientation.

    Notes: The Arrhenius plot of the rate of V79 Chinese hamster cell inactivation due to hypothermia has a “break” around 7-10°C with optimum storage temperature for unprotected cells being about 10°C. Addition of the membrane lipid perturber, butylated hydroxytoluene, improves survival of cells when compared to controls at temperatures below this break but not above. Arrhenius plots of growth rates of the cells show breaks at 30 and 40°C. Measurements of membrane fluidity by electron spin resonance or membrane polarization anisotropy by fluorescence spectrophotometry techniques as a function of temperature in these cells also reveal “breaks” centered around 8 and 30°C. Hence, the changes in the rate of cell inactivation and growth as a function of temperature may be related to membrane lipid phase changes.

    Notes: In order to study the generation, factors controlling endogenous folate pools, and their functional importance, Friend erythroleukemia cells were grown in media containing 100; 1,000; and 10,000 ng/ml of tritiated pteroylglutamic acid (3H)PteGIu1 and then studied in unlabeled media with varying amounts of PteGlu1. The intracellular folate pool was directly proportional to the PteGlu1 in which the cells were incubated. At equilibrium, greater than 95% of the labeled intracellular folate pool chromatographed as polyglutamyl folate, regardless of the exogenous folate concentration. The functional importance of the intracellular folate pool was studied by varying the endogenous pool and the exogenous (media) supply. The ability of the cells to replicate in the absence of exogenous folate was directly proportional to the intracellular polyglutamyl folate pool. The maximal rate of replication, however, required exogenous PteGlu1 in addition. The cell doubling time was the most important determinant of intracellular folate turnover; changes in the intracellular pool size and the extracellular folate concentration had no effect on the turnover time. In a rapidly proliferating tissue, the onset of functional folate deficiency will be determined by dilution of intracellular polyglutamates among progeny until a critical level is reached.

    Notes: Uptake of 2-aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) at concentrations of 0.1 mM to 30 mM was examined in sodium-containing and sodium-free media in hepatocytes pretreated without hormones (control), with hormones, or with amino acid depletion. Results show that 1-minute but not 4-minute rates can be taken as initial rates for the total or sodium-dependent transport of AIB. The data for the 1-minute sodium-dependent transport of AIB were analyzed by a comptuer program and also by Eadie-Hofstee and Lineweaver-Burk plots, and a single saturable system was found. In the control cultures, the saturable system had a Km of 1-2 mM AIB and a Vmax of 1.2 nmoles AIB/mg protein/minute. There was an increase in the Vmax of two to three-fold after pretreating the cultures with insulin or amino acid depletion, three to four-fold with glucagon, and six to seven fold with glucagon + dexamethasone.

    Notes: This article reports the morphological observations on the surface changes of poly(glycolic acid) sutures which have been exposed to various dosages of γ irradiation (0, 2.5, 5.0, 10, 20, and 40 Mrad) and duration of immersion (0, 7, 14, 28, 48, 60, and 90 days) in a physiological saline buffer. The most important gross morphological characteristics of PGA suture hydrolytic degradation is the formation of surface cracks on the filaments. The regularity of the surface cracks increased with an increase in the γ irradiation and the duration of hydrolysis. Surface cracks were not observed in irradiated sutures that had not been subjected to hydrolytic degradation. The arrangement of the surface cracks, their orientation on the filaments, and the direction of crack propagation provide very useful information for depicting the mechanism of hydrolytic degradation in this class of fibrous material. The microfibrillar model of fiber structure has been used as the basis for the proposed degradation mechanism of PGA in vitro. It is believed that hydrolysis occurs initially in the amorphous regions sandwiched between two crystalline zones, as tie-chain segments, free chain ends, and chain folds in these regions degrade into fragments. As degradation proceeds, the size of the fragments reaches the stage at which they can be dissolved into the buffer medium. This dissolution removes the fragments from the amorphous regions, and surface cracks appeared.
