    Notes: Summary Regeneration of muscle spindles was quantified in a series of orthotopically and heterotopically autografted muscles of pigeons. Significantly fewer spindles relative to numbers of extrafusal fibers were present in grafts than in normal muscles. These results are in marked contrast to observations of free-grafted muscles of rats. A majority of grafts of the metapatagialis, a muscle devoid of spindles, into the site of the anterior latissimus dorsi contained spindles. A few spindles were present in grafts of the extensor digitorum communis, which normally contains many spindles, into the site formerly occupied by the metapatagialis whereas muscle spindles were absent in orthotopic grafts of the metapatagialis muscle. These observations suggest that the spindle-like structures observed in the extensor digitorum communis muscles, which regenerated in the sites of the metapatagialis, were derived from spindles of the donor muscle. Thus muscle spindles in transplanted avian muscle can form by two distinct developmental processes.

    Notes: Summary Pigeon muscles lacking muscle spindles were grafted into sites which normally have a muscle containing spindles. The reciprocal transplantations were also made. After two to eight months, the graft of the donor muscle without spindles had regenerated into a muscle containing muscle spindles. The reciprocal grafts, muscles containing spindles transplanted to a site lacking spindle innervation, had neither muscle spindles nor remnants of the spindles. These experiments demonstrate that 1) the innervation is required for formation of the spindle; 2) the original spindles do not survive transplantation; and 3) parts of the original spindle are not required for spindle regeneration.

    Notes: This article presents several characteristics of a state-of-the-art fermentation air filter. The filter medium is composed solely of PTFE and has an absolute pore size rating of 0.2 μm. Quantitative bacteria and bacteriophage retention is shown based on live organism challenge tests. A nondestructive filter test, correlated to the microorganism challenge tests and called the Forward Flow Integrity Test, is described. This test has a sensitivity of one part in 1012 and can be performed in situ.

    Notes: The hydrogen-oxidizing bacterium, Alcaligenes eutrophus (ATCC 17707), was grown in chemostat culture with gas-phase (hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide) and liquid-phase (mineral nutrients) feedstreams; data were used to generate an analytical form for the specific growth rate equation. Model parameters obtained include Monod rate parameters for dissolved hydrogen and oxygen gases, yield coefficients, and specific maintenance rates under conditions of hydrogen or oxygen limitations. These values are similar to some obtained previously by Ohi et al. for another hydrogen bacterium. The observed increase in specific maintenance rates under hydrogen-versus-oxygen-limited culture may be associated with hydrogenase deactivation by oxygen.

    Notes: Plasma from normal male and female rats was analyzed, after removal of albumin by affinity chromatography, by two-dimensional electrophoresis. The results demonstrated gender differences in two plasma proteins with apparent molecular weights of 70 000 and 84 000 and isoelectric points ranging from 6.2 to 6.4, and 5.1 to 5.5, respectively. Both proteins were found to be more concentrated in the plasma minus albumin (P-alb) fraction of females than males in both Wistar and Sprague-Dawley rats. The 70 000 protein is serum albumin which was more completely removed from male plasma than female plasma. A possible mechanism responsible for this difference is discussed. The results support the existence of “maleness” and “femaleness” in blood protein patterns of rats.

    Notes: We describe the use of 35S-labelled stains for the detection of submicrogram amounts of protein in SDS polyacrylamide gels. Many stains used to detect protein can be rendered radioactive, and proteins can be detected by radiofluorography due to stain binding in the absence of visible color. Of the stains tested. [35S]Ponceau Red S and [35S]Serva Blue R gave the best results. The potential utility of protein detection with radioactive stains is discussed.
