Description: The synthetic peptide NH2-Tyr-Pro-Phe-Pro-CONH2 (morphiceptin), which is the amide of a fragment of the milk protein beta-casein, has morphinelike activities and is highly specific for morphine (mu) receptors but not for enkephalin (delta) receptors. It is as active as morphine in the guinea pig ileum but much less active in the mouse and rat vas deferens. The discovery of this specific morphine receptor ligand substantiates the hypothesis of multiple opiate receptors. The ligand, which may be of physiological significance since a very similar, or identical, activity can be detected in enzymatic digests of beta-casein, may prove useful for further investigation of the functions of opiate receptor subtypes.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Chang, K J -- Lillian, A -- Hazum, E -- Cuatrecasas, P -- Chang, J K -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1981 Apr 3;212(4490):75-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6259732" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Immunoreactive corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and dynorphin-(I-8) were visualized in rat hypothalamus by immunohistofluorescence with specific antibodies. In brains from colchicine-treated, adrenalectomized rats, neuronal perikarya with immunoreactive CRF were observed in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus. The CRF occurred together with the dynorphin-(1-8). However, the CRF immunoreactivity occurred only in a subpopulation of the dynorphin-(1-8) immunoreactive cells. These findings suggest that there may be a functional interrelationship of CRF with dynorphin-related opioid peptides and provide further evidence that neurons may contain more than one bioactive substance.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Roth, K A -- Weber, E -- Barchas, J D -- Chang, D -- Chang, J K -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Jan 14;219(4581):189-91.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6129700" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: A triangular plate bending hybrid element is constructed according to Reissner's principle. It has 9 degrees-of-freedom and the shear effect is included. The C0 formulation of thick plate is directly developed to solve the thin plate by imposing the discrete Kirchhoff constraints. The matching problem for bending and shear in the hybrid model of thick plate is effectively treated by use of the principle of the energy regulation such that the unified analysis of thick and thin plates is realized. Finally, numerical examples are presented.

Notes: Using the partial-boundary element approach, in which only a part of the boundary in problem is discretized, the elastic torsion problem of a prismatic beam of a cracked rectangular cross-section has been solved in this brief paper, together with a numerical example to show the accuracy and versatility of the approach.

Notes: An optimum design sensitivity analysis capability is reported which exploits the approximation concepts-dual method formulation of the minimum weight structural sizing problem. An efficient iterative solution technique is used to facilitate determination of sensitivity derivatives for both primal and dual variables. Estimates on the useful range of parameter perturbations, over which the optimum design sensitivity projections can be expected to yield satisfactory revised optimum designs, are also obtained. Numerical results for several example problems will be presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the capability reported.

Notes: A theoretical study was carried out to achieve a better understanding of the oscillatory behavior of a gas bubble growing (or collapsing) in a viscoelastic liquid, by taking into account both the hydrodynamic and diffusion effects. The Zaremba-DeWitt model was chosen to represent the rheological properties of the suspending medium. The finite difference method was employed to solve the governing system equations. The computational results show that, in the case of very fast diffusion (i.e., constant bubble pressure), the oscillatory behavior of a bubble takes place only when the ratio of the initial pressure difference between the gas bubble and the liquid phase to the elastic modulus of the suspending medium is below a certain critical value. On the other hand, in the case of very slow diffusion, the oscillatory behavior of a bubble persists, regardless of the magnitude of the rheological properties of the suspending medium. Our study indicates further that the diffusivity of a gas has a profound influence on the occurrence of oscillatory behavior, that the elastic property of the suspending medium enhances oscillatory behavior while its viscosity plays the opposite role, and that even a Newtonian medium can give rise to an oscillatory pattern of bubble growth (or collapse), although it dampens out very quickly.

Notes: A model for packed-bed reactors with dispersion is derived rigorously via the volume averaging approach. Though it is quantitatively more consistent with experimental data, it requires less computational efforts than the prevalent Fickian model. The adverse effects of dispersion on conversion are demonstrated both numerically and analytically using the new model.
