Notizen: Summary Twelve hours after the diet of 3-week-old chicks was changed from a 1% to a 0.1% concentration of calcium (Ca), the growth rate and circulating levels of growth hormone had fallen while renal 25-hydroxecholecaiferol-24-hydroxylase had risen. The amount of47Ca incorporated into bone from an injection given 18 h previously was lower than in the control birds. Over the following 21/2 days on the low Ca diet, the renal 1-hydroxylase activity rose and the plasma prolactin level fell, but the other parameters moved back toward the control level. It was concluded that early adjustments in hormonal and mineral metabolism counteract the acute effects of a dietary Ca shortage until longer-term adaptive changes begin to compensate for a continuing Ca deficiency. The renal hydroxylase activities were not directly influenced by the level of circulating growth hormone or prolactin.

Notizen: Abstract Enzyme assays of the roots of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) fed NH 4 + show high glutamate-dehydrogenase (GDH; EC 1.4.1.3) activity compared with glutamine-synthetase (GS; EC 6.3.1.2) activity, indicating that GDH may be involved in ammonium assimilation in the root. When 15NH 4 + is fed to barley roots, a high accumulation of 15N takes place in free amino compounds, particularly glutamine and glutamate. When the GS inhibitor, methionine sulfoximine (MSO), is added to the 15NH 4 + feeding medium the free amino compounds remain unlabelled while 15NH 4 + accumulates rapidly in the roots. Root enzyme assays demonstrate that GS is completely inhibited by MSO treatment, while the activity of GDH remains unaffected. The feeding of 15N-amido glutamine to the roots in the presence of MSO and the subsequent 15N enrichment of the free amino compounds of the root show that MSO does not interfere substantially with nitrogen assimilation after the formation of glutamine. These results indicate that in the barley root, ammonium absorbed from the soil is assimilated entirely via the GS-glutamate synthase (GOGAT) pathway, and that GDH plays little, if any, part in this process.

Notizen: Abstract An aquatic biological survey was conducted in 1979–1980 to determine the effects of drainage from an active coal strip-mine on Trout Creek, in northwest Colorado, U.S.A. Sampling was conducted over four seasons at four stations for periphyton, benthic invertebrates and fish. Periphyton in Trout Creek changed in the relative abundance of algae divisions in no apparent relation to mining. Diatoms were the predominant division at all sites. Golden-brown algae were abundant in spring at the stations upstream and adjacent to the mine. Blue-green algae were relatively important at stations upstream and downstream of the mine in winter. Benthic invertebrates exhibited a progressive increase in density, biomass and number of taxa from the upstream station to the downstream station. Shannon-Wiener diversity index for bethic invertebrates decreased slightly downstream of mine drainage but remained indicative of a clean water community. Aquatic insects (especially Trichoptera) were the predominant invertebrates at all stations. Analysis of functional groups of benthic invertebrates revealed increased importance of collector species at the lower sites while shredders were most important upstream of the mine. Unlike the invertebrates, fish exhibited slightly lower biomass at the station adjacent to the mine. The decrease was due to fewer salmonids. However, salmonid density and biomass increased substantially at the station just downstream of the mine. Non-game species (suckers and minnows) increased in numbers downstream and were most abundant at the lowest station. This coal strip-mine had little discernable adverse effects on the periphyton and invertebrates of Trout Creek. Fish populations did not appear to be significantly affected by the mine. Apparently, the presence of settling ponds and a buffer zone of unmined land between the mine and the stream helped to minimize adverse effects.

Notizen: The interaction of iodine cyanide and cyanide in aqueous solution has been reinvestigated and it has been confirmed that a complex cyanide ion, the dicyanoiodate(I) ion [I(CN)2]- is formed. This ion has been isolated in the solid state for the first time, as its tetraphenylarsonium, tetraphenylphosphonium and caesium salts. Infrared and Raman spectroscopic studies of these salts are reported. These spectra are fully consistent with a linear centrosymmetric (D∞h) structure for the [I(CN)2]-ion. Assignments are made for six of the seven fundamentals of the [I(CN)2]-ion in the caesium salt.

Notizen: The [I2CN]- ion, previously only known in aqueous solution, has been isolated as its caesium salt; and the previously unknown [BrICN]- ions [ClICN]- have been isolated as their caesium salts. The Raman and IR vibrational spectra of these three caesium salts have been investigated in detail and indicate that the halide ions coordinate to the I atom of ICN to form linear (C∞ν) [X - I - CN]- ions (X=I, Br or Cl), contained in a centrosymmetric unit cell. This C∞ν structure is supported by a normal coordinate analysis for the [IICN]- ion.
