    Description: The color-magnitude diagram of giants in the Galactic spheroid is shown to be important in determining the number-color histogram of stars brighter than B = 19 mag. This result is demonstrated by comparing a standard Galaxy model with observations of 391 stars in a field in the direction of Aquarius (l = 36.5 deg, b = -51.1 deg). More than 80 percent of the spheroid stars and 40 percent of all stars in this magnitude range and direction are predicted to be giants. At most, a few percent of the spheroid stars in the current sample can lie on the main sequence bluer than the turn-off onto the giant branch near B - V approximately 0.4. The available observations suggest that the blue tip of the horizontal branch of the spheroid must be sparsely populated about a factor of 10 less than would be expected if the color-magnitude diagram of the spheroid were the same as diagrams for any of the globular clusters M3, M13, or M92. The total dispersion in colors (measurement errors and intrinsic dispersion) has a standard deviation in B - V color that is less than 0.2 mag.

    Description: Narrow interstellar absorption lines of S II 1259.52, Si II 1260.42, and Fe II 1608.46 due to gas in the disk and the halo of the Galaxy have been detected in the spectrum of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk 509 with the International Ultraviolet Explorer. This gas is also seen at higher resolution in the Ca II and Na I absorption lines in two components at LSR velocities of +6 and +62 km/s. In addition, narrow Ly-alpha and C IV absorption near the Seyfert redshift seem to be present in the spectrum. Si II 1260.42 absorption from the galactic disk and from the Magellanic Stream or the halo of the SMC have been detected with the IUE in the spectrum of Fairall 9. The observations of these two objects when combined with existing results are shown to be consistent with a corotating galactic halo having a height of less than 10 kpc at the sun.

    Description: It is pointed out that supernovae in other galaxies create spontaneous opportunities to probe spectroscopically the gaseous material in galactic halos. Because of their brightness, supernovae offer an unparalleled chance to obtain spectra with high wavelength resolution and/or signal-to-noise ratio. The present investigation is concerned with observations of visual interstellar lines in the spectrum of a supernova discovered on July 3, 1983, and identified as Type I. The supernova was located 124 arc sec south and 122 arc sec west of the nucleus of M83. Evidence is obtained that for velocities near that of M83, the line of sight toward the supernova contains a complex array of absorption features of Ca II. In both Ca II and Na I, the absorptions associated with M83 are far more prominent than those halfway through the disk (and halo) of the Milky Way Galaxy. It is felt that many of the displaced velocity components in the M83 system arise from a gaseous halo.
