    Description: High spatial resolution images of the T Tauri star HL Tau were obtained at 1.6 microns and 2.2 microns. The original images as well as maximum entropy image reconstructions reveal a circumstellar envelope structure, similar at both wavelenghts, and extended along P.A. = 112 deg; the 10 percent width of the structure is 1.9 sec (300 AU at 160 pc). The extended structure is interpreted as light scattered toward earth by dust in a disk surrounding this young stellar object. Polarization measurements made at 2.2 microns support this hypothesis. The total solid particle mass is, at minimum, 5 x 10 to the -7th solar mass.

    Description: The importance of coordinating different types of observations of a comet is illustrated in terms of spectral data on Comet Bowell. Photometric data in 1980 indicated that OH emissions were occurring when the comet was still more than 4 AU from the sun. Further measurements were arranged with the IUE satellite, the photoelectric scanner at Cerro Tololo and the IR telescope on Mauna Kea. Several sizes of diaphragms were used in order to estimate variations with respect to aperture. Calculations were made to quantify the wavelengths observed as a function of the grains' cross-sections. The OH emission was confirmed by the spectrographic and photometric data. It is suggested that sufficient dark materials are present on the cometary surface to have enhanced the absorption of solar radiation to levels sufficient for heating and dissociating surface ice particles.

    Description: Observations from the Einstein Observatory reveal a previously unreported source, 1E 1145.1-6141, within 15 arc min of 2S 1145-619 and of comparable intensity during 1979 July. Periodicity analysis of the data shows a 290 + or - 2 s period for the 2S source and a 298 + or - 4 s period for the 1E source, confirming the previous Ariel 5 report of two periods in this range from this region of the sky.

    Description: A scanning spectrometer system which is capable of being flown in high-altitude balloon studies of the earth's atmosphere is presented. The instrument is small, has a large operative wavelength range of 350-1100 nm, high data density, and real-time data telemetry to ground. A computer software package is used to provide a real-time monitor of balloon gondola and instrument performance, with the software reliability enhanced by proof of correctness techniques and exhibiting the high degree of reliability necessary for the monitoring system.

    Description: Photoelectric observations of Comet P/Encke during its 1980 apparition are combined with other published data to relate molecular production rates to the visual lightcurve. In addition to a substantial asymmetry about perihelion which is already well known, there are shorter-term variations in specific molecules which have not been duplicated by models. The most dramatic of these fluctuations is a rapid decrease by more than a factor of 3 in the production of OH at 0.75 AU preperihelion.

    Description: Using the imaging X-ray detectors on the Einstein Observatory, what appear to be two overlapping galactic supernova remnants are discovered, one of which is clearly identified with the previously cataloged radio remnant G296.1-0.7. The other feature has no radio or optical counterpart. It is a nearly complete ring with a diameter of 20-25 arcmin, designated 1E 1149.4-6209. Because of its morphology, because there is evidence for supernova events in the vicinity, and because there seems to be no plausible alternative, 1E 1149.4-6209 is classified as a supernova remnant. This remnant and others like it, which may be found first in X-rays rather than radio or optical waves, may have important implications regarding the evolution of supernova remnants and the rate of supernovae in our Galaxy.

    Description: A photometric survey of main-sequence stars in the Pleiades, Hyades, and Malmquist Field, to investigate variability among solar-type stars, had been continued at Cloudcroft Observatory for a second season. Possibly six of 40 Pleiades stars, two (possibly six) of 49 Hyades stars and possibly four of 42 stars in the Malmquist Field are found to be variable. Parallel observations of Hyades stars were obtained also at Lowell Observatory. These measurements, which achieved better precision, reveal significiant variations in eleven (possibly 16) of 36 Hyades stars, all of spectral type F7 V-K2 V. Agreement between the two surveys is acceptable. The two seasons of the Cloudcroft survey show that changes in the mean annual brightness of the Hyades stars accompany changes in the amplitude of their short-term variability, in the sense that a star tends to become fainter as its variability increases and vice versa. Color effects are absent.
