    Description: The paper presents the results of high-time-resolution white-light photometry of H2215-086 obtained at Las Campanas Observatory and Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory during 1985-1987. Descriptions of periodic features, including power spectra due to rotational and orbital modulation, are presented as well as quasi-periodic features. It is found that H2215-086 displays large-amplitude modulations in its optical, IR, and X-ray emission on the 20.9 min rotational period of the white dwarf. Possible sites for this emission are discussed.

    Description: The origin of life on earth is seen arising as a natural consequence of a long series of physical and chemical processes taking place in association with evolution of the universe. The present theory is that any premordial earth atmosphere, resulting from accumulation from the primitive solar nebula, was probably swept away by the very intensive T Tauri stage of the solar wind. Subsequently, the present atmosphere and oceans of the earth were outgassed from the interior. Biochemical components of the gases were mainly water vapor and carbon dioxide.

    Description: 2D, N-body simulations of the nonlinear development of long-wavelength instabilities predicted to occur early in the formation stage of protostellar disks forming single stars are presented under conditions of controlled energy loss. It is found that the thermodynamics and long-term evolution of gravitationally unstable disks are intimately coupled: the global evolution rate is linearly proportional to the rate at which dissipated energy reaches and escapes from the surfaces of the disk. An upper limit is obtained to the rate at which energy is lost if it is assumed that the disk maintains vertical isothermality.

    Description: The general analytic solution developed by Steinman-Cameron and Durisen and published in 1988 for the evolution of dissipative nonplanar disks is applied to captured galactic disks in model galaxies with nonspherical, scale-free, logarithmic gravitational potentials. Such potentials produce flat rotation curves, similar to those seen in real galaxies. In this case, the analytic solution yields a self-similar structure for the warps and twists that develop while the disks is settling. Being scale-free in a simple, analytic form, this solution is completely defined by only a few dimensionless fitting parameters. As a result, it can be utilized as a mathematical tool to fit settling disks in real galaxies. The minimum time it takes for a disk to settle into a steady state orientation is also a scale-free quantity when expressed in units of the precession period or the orbit period. For realistic parameters, settling times are on the order of one-half to two periods. The use of the time-dependent structure of settling disks as a probe of the three-dimensional mass distribution of the host galaxies, including dark halos, is discussed.

    Description: Results are presented of high-speed photometric observations of the Am Her object, V834 Centaurus which, during its high state, revealed the 0.3-0.9 Hz quasi-period oscillations (QPOs) with rms amplitudes of 3.3 +/-1.1 percent and 2.5 +/-0.8 percent in the V and R bands, respectively, while the U-band amplitude was consistent with zero on one night but was 2.5 +/-1.2 percent on the following night. The QPOs in the B band were always consistent with zero. The data were obtained on the nights of June 16-21, 1990, when the average V magnitude of V834 Cen was about 15.3, confirming the high-luminosity state. The dominance of the QPOs by V-band emission is in contrast to earlier studies by Larsson which found that the QPOs were dominated by emission in the B and R band, depending upon the luminosity state of V834 Cen. In all cases, the QPOs of V834 have frequencies of 0.3-0.9 Hz. It is inferred that the color of the QPOs could be highly variable between luminosity states and may be variable in the U band within the high-luminosity state.

    Description: It is suggested that the explosion of a Type II supernova triggered the collapse of a nearby interstellar cloud and led to the formation of the solar system. Estimates of the abundances resulting from nuclear processing of the supernova ejecta are presented. It appears promising that nucleosynthesis in this single supernova event can account for most isotopic anomalies and traces of extinct radioactivities in solar-system material.

    Description: The hypothesis that pulsating X-ray sources could be vibrating white dwarfs is investigated. The masses are calculated for several white-dwarf models having various modes of vibration which have the observed eigenfrequencies of the Centaurus X-3 and the Hercules X-1 sources. If the hypothesis is correct, Cen X-3 is vibrating radially in the fundamental mode or not higher than the first two overtones, and its mass is in the range 0.7-1.2 solar masses. The Her X-1 source would be vibrating in a quadrupole P mode, and would have a mass in the range 1.1-1.25 solar masses.

    Description: The author has previously shown that a considerable amount of clumping of interstellar grains is likely to take place during the free-fall collapse phase of an interstellar cloud which is forming the primitive solar nebula, with the assumption of sonic turbulence in the gas. The original estimate involved the crude assumption of hierarchal amalgamation of the grains upon collision. A Monte Carlo simulation of this process confirmed the general features of the results, but it was further found that the introduction of a low sticking probability reduced the size of the lumps quite significantly. A more realistic calculation was therefore carried out in which it was assumed that clumps of grains would tend to stick together if their collisions were approximately head-on, but that they would tend to fragment into smaller pieces if the collisions were more tangential. For typical values of the amalgamation parameter, this tends to spread the mass of the interstellar grains over a wide range of clump sizes, ranging from individual grains to objects in the millimeter or centimeter size.
