    Notes: The critical temperatures, pressures and volumes of several mixtures containing CO2, C2H6, C3H8, and C4H10 have been measured using a heavy walled, variable volume, cylindrical glass vessel. In each mixturre the relative proportions of the three hydrocarbon solutes to one another were changed; total solute mole fraction never exceeded 0.1. A detailed study of the mixture CO2 + C3H8 shows that the critical temperature exhibits a minimum at a C3H8 mole fraction of 0.0265. Our mixture data are analyzed using a polydisperse model of dilute solutions.

    Notes: In a study of intersterility groups in the genus Armillaria, a scanning stage microscope photometer was used to obtain digitized images of photographs of isoelectric focusing patterns. Absorbance values were then mapped from the metric scale to the pH scale. Absorbance values in specified pH intervals were used as features in multivariate statistical procedures to characterize populations and to assign isolates to populations. Digital image analysis techniques were used to obtain an enhanced image of faint or poorly resolved bands.

    Description: A series of recommendations constituting a core program for planetary exploration, to last from the present to the year 2000, is the outcome of a two-year study undertaken by the NASA Solar System Exploration Committee. The missions envisioned by the core program must be insulated from costly changes and delays once they are approved. The present Committee has therefore restricted its recommendations to missions which do not require novel technologies, but rather continue the techniques of the flybys, orbiters and atmospheric entry probes that have been successful in the past. Recommendations are made for exploration of the inner planets, cometary and asteroid bodies, and the outer planets. Attention is given to the identification of key elements driving mission costs. It is noted that the Space Shuttle/Centaur upper stage combination brings within reach comet and asteroid rendezvous missions that were once thought to require costly new technology.

    Description: Specific secretory cells were separated from suspensions of cultured primary human embryonic cells and rat pituitary cells in microgravity conditions, with an objective of isolating the subfractions of kidney cells that produce the largest amount of urakinase, and the subfractions of rat pituitary cells that secrete growth hormones (GH), prolactin (PRL), and other hormones. It is inferred from the experimental observations that the surface charge distributions of the GH-containing cells differ from those of the PRL-containing cells, which is explained by the presence of secretory products on the surface of pituitary cells. For kidney cells, the electrophoretic mobility distributions in flight experiments were spread more than the ground controls.

    Description: Static zone electrophoresis is an electrokinetic method of separating macromolecules and small particles. However, its application for the isolation of biological cells and concentrated protein solutions is limited by sedimentation and convection. Microgravity eliminates or reduces sedimentation, floatation, and density-driven convection arising from either Joule heating or concentration differences. The advantages of such an environment were first demonstrated in space during the Apollo 14 and 16 missions. In 1975 the Electrophoresis Technology Experiment (MA-011) was conducted during the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project flight. In 1979 a project was initiated to repeat the separations of human kidney cells. One of the major objectives of the Electrophoresis Equipment Verification Tests (EEVT) on STS-3 was to repeat and thereby validate the first successful electrophoretic separation of human kidney cells. Attention is given to the EEVT apparatus, the preflight electrophoresis, and inflight operational results.
