    Description: The report describes a structure for a strong, lightweight corrugated sheet. The sheet is planar or curved and includes a plurality of corrugation segments, each segment being comprised of a generally U-shaped corrugation with a part-cylindrical crown and cap strip, and straight side walls and with secondary corrugations oriented at right angles to said side walls. The cap strip is bonded to the crown and the longitudinal edge of said cap strip extends beyond edge at the intersection between said crown and said side walls. The high strength relative to weight of the structure makes it desirable for use in aircraft or spacecraft.

    Description: Fuel costs account now for approximately 60 percent of the direct operating costs of airlines and future commercial transport will utilize advanced technologies for saving fuel on the basis of drag reduction. Laminar flow control (LFC) represents such an advanced technology. A new laminar flow wing on a reconfigured WB-66 aircraft was tested in the X-21 flight program. The tests confirmed that extensive laminar flow could be achieved at subsonic transport cruise conditions. Factors affecting adversely the maintenance of laminar flow were found to be related to ice particles encountered during the penetration of cirrus clouds or haze. The present investigation is concerned with the effect of ice particles on LFC, taking into account the results obtained in the Leading Edge Flight Test (LEFT) being conducted by NASA. Attention is given to ice particle measurements in the LEFT program.

    Description: A computational model of the deterministic and stochastic processes involved in remote sensing is used to study spectral feature identification techniques for real-time onboard processing of data acquired with advanced earth-resources sensors. Preliminary results indicate that: Narrow spectral responses are advantageous; signal normalization improves mean-square distance (MSD) classification accuracy but tends to degrade maximum-likelihood (MLH) classification accuracy; and MSD classification of normalized signals performs better than the computationally more complex MLH classification when imaging conditions change appreciably from those conditions during which reference data were acquired. The results also indicate that autonomous categorization of TM signals into vegetation, bare land, water, snow and clouds can be accomplished with adequate reliability for many applications over a reasonably wide range of imaging conditions. However, further analysis is required to develop computationally efficient boundary approximation algorithms for such categorization.

    Description: Fully reusable launch vehicle concepts being studied for post-Shuttle era transports present major challenges for the structural design of large propellant tankage. The dominant structural elements are internal tankage for both cryogenic and non-cryogenic propellants which must operate in a broad range of thermal environments while meeting requirements for low weight and reusability. Several approaches to integral tank design are discussed and an analysis of a hot structure honeycomb sandwich tank for a circular body vehicle is presented.

    Description: Two structural concepts for a fully reusable STS orbiter are compared with respect to weight and the ability to satisfy structural goals. The cryogenic propellant tanks for both concepts use welded, blade-stiffened aluminum skins for leak-free containment and compatibility with LOX and LH2. The tanks are sized primarily by pressure, although some areas are sized by bending and fracture mechanics considerations. The tank concept is regarded as state-of-the-art, even though it requires a closed cell foam insulation with a dry air purge to prevent air liquefaction and ice formation. It is noted that the foam will require testing to verify its design life for use in the STS. One concept has nonintegral tanks suspended inside an insulated aluminum airframe and thrust structure. Here, a durable thermal protection system external insulation is mechanically attached to the airframe, allowing a buckled skin design. The other concept uses a novel structural arrangement consisting of a separate tank/thrust structure that supports a hot advanced-carbon-carbon aeroshell structure.

    Description: This paper presents a technique for converting spectral radiance to the more fundamental quantity of interest, spectral reflectance. A full implementation of the technique requires the availability of radiative transfer software. However, a set of tables (which allows an approximate derivation of reflectance) is included herein, and covers a representative range of environmental parameter values. An error analysis is performed which gives, for an uncertainty in each of the input parameters (solar zenith angle, visibility, sensor altitude, off-nadir viewing angle, background reflectance and surface elevation), the resulting error in derived reflectance. As a demonstration of the technique, several sets of spectral radiance data from the Imperial Valley, California, are presented as spectral reflectances.
