Description:
A procedure for assessing the seismic hazard based on the algorithm proposed by Cornell (1968) and the respective computing programme by McGuire (1976), was applied to the territory of the GDR in view of the influence of 10 earthquake source regions. The delineated regions are described by the cumulative frequency of earthquakes as a function of their intensities and the expected maximum intensities I"SUB max". The intensity attenuation with distance was determined by generalizing the observed macroseismic observations. Hazard maps displaying the expected macroseismic intensities for mean return periods of 100, 500, 5000 and 10 000 years are presented and discussed, explicitly comparing the results with the map of maximum observed intensities of the GDR. -Authors
