Notes: Abstract The treatment of merino wool with ammoniacal silver nitrate results in a selective staining of high-sulfur proteins. The method has been applied to unmodified and reduced fibres. The electron microscopical studies are supplemented by a quantitative analysis by means of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. At the saturation point no difference in the silver uptake of reduced and unreduced fibres can be established. However, the samples show considerable differences regarding the kinetics of the reaction. The photometric analysis yields a silver uptake of 3 mol Ag/mol cysteine and 6 mol Ag/mol cystine. The silver deposition depends upon the formation of silver mercaptide and silver complexes of unknown structure. In comparison with cysteine the mercaptide formation from cystine occurs very slowly, because the disulfide bond first has to be cleaved.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine interaction of194Ir (j π =1−;T 1/2=19.4 h) in Fe and Ni has been investigated with the technique of nuclear magnetic resonance on oriented nuclei. For both systems the electronic-orbital-momentum induced electric quadrupole splitting could be resolved. The magnetic and electric hyperfine splitting frequencies,v M =¦gμ N B HF/h¦ andv Q =e 2 qQ/h, respectively, were measured as:194IrFe:v m =408.54 (23) MHz;v q =−2.47(20) MHz;194IrNi:v M =135.24(5) MHz;v q =−1.23 (3) MHz. Taking into account a 3% uncertainty arising from hyperfine anomalies theg-factor is deduced as ¦g¦=0.39 (1). The electric quadrupole moment,Q=+0.352 (18)b, is slightly smaller than expected from the known systematics of deformation parameters in this mass region.

Notes: Abstract The interaction of glutaraldehyde with model aliphatic amines was studied in order to understand the crosslinking reaction of glutaraldehyde with proteins. The reaction in organic solvents gave N-alkyl-1,4-dihydropyridines and N,N′-dialkyl-1,5-diiminopentanes. The isolated products are new or were previously described by us for the first time1. Hydration of the reaction products led to stable N-alkylpiperidines and N,N′-dialkyl-1,5-diaminopentanes. In aqueous solution the reaction depends on thepH: at apH above 7, N-alkyl-1,4-dihydropyridines and at apH below 7, polymers were obtained. For the crosslinking reaction of proteins with glutaraldehyde the following mechanism is proposed: Monomeric glutaraldehyde reacts with the protein to give intermediate N-alkyl-2,6-dihydroxypiperidines. Intramolecular dehydration leads to the corresponding N-alkyl-1,4-dihydropyridines. Condensation of the cyclic monohydrate of glutaraldehyde and N-alkyl-2,6-dihydroxypiperidines gives linear polymeric crosslinks containing α-oxo-N-alkylpiperidine units.

Notes: Abstract A method for the synthesis of arginine peptides is described, in which the side chain guanidine function is blocked through reaction with 1,2-cyclohexanedione in borate buffers. Coupling to the carboxyl group of arginine was achieved by active ester, by dicyclohexylcarbodiimide/1-hydroxybenzotriazole1, and by the mixed anhydride methods2. Neither lactam formation nor acylation of the vicinal hydroxyls of the N7, N8-(1,2-dihydroxycyclohex-1,2-ylene) guanidino group was observed. Removal of the protecting group is strongly influenced by steric factors. Some side reactions observed during modification of peptides and protein fragments with 1,2-cyclohexanedione are also described.

Notes: Abstract The xenogeneic- and allogeneic immunological specificity of the hydrocoral Millepora dichotoma has been investigated. Xenogeneic histoicompatibility reactions have been observed between this hydrocoral and a series of species belonging to the Demospongiae and to the Anthozoa (both Hexacorallia and Octocorallia). The xenogeneic histoincompatibility reactions proceed in the following sequence: (a) Species-unspecific sensitization; (b) necrosis formation, which is very likely due to an autolytic process; (c) callus formation, due to an hyperplastic growth of stolons; and (d) formation of a contact barrier in form of a barrier layer or a restored stolonial layer. Allogeneic histoincompatibility reactions are restricted to those regions of the coral which are interspersed with polyps; allogenic fusion is observed between branches, with a high density of polyps and the “foot”-region, which is characterized by a low polyp density.

Notes: Abstract Preliminary solar envelope models have been computed using the single-mode anelastic equations as a description of turbulent convection. This approach provides estimates for the variation with depth of the largest convective cellular flows, akin to giant cells, with horizontal sizes comparable to the total depth of the convection zone. These modal nonlinear treatments are capable of describing compressible motions occurring over many density scale heights. Single-mode anelastic solutions have been constructed for a solar envelope whose mean stratification is nearly adiabatic over most of its vertical extent because of the enthalpy (or convective) flux explicitly carried by the big cell; a sub-grid scale representation of turbulent heat transport is incorporated into the treatment near the surface. The single-mode equations admit two solutions for the same horizontal wavelength, and these are distinguished by the sense of the vertical velocity at the center of the three-dimensional cell. It is striking that the upward directed flows experience large pressure effects when they penetrate into regions where the vertical scale height has become small compared to their horizontal scale. The fluctuating pressure can modify the density fluctuations so that the sense of the buoyancy force is changed, with buoyancy braking actually achieved near the top of the convection zone. The pressure and buoyancy work in the shallow but unstable H+ and He+ ionization regions can serve to decelerate the vertical motions and deflect them laterally, leading to strong horizontal shearing motions. It appears that such dynamical processes may explain why the amplitudes of flows related to the largest scales of convection are so feeble in the solar atmosphere.

Notes: Abstract Calculations in the framework of the refined resonating group method (RRGM) have been particularly successful in describing light nuclear systems with mass numbers 3 ≦ A ≦ 12 in the low-energy domain. Further developments of this approach to extend the realm of applicability beyond its present limits are introduced. We merge SU3-cluster model and RRGM techniques for the investigation of higher mass numbers (A ≦ 28), incorporate one-body operators for the description of, e.g., photo-induced processes, and add polynomials in the intercluster functions to allow the description of medium-energy processes.
