Notes: Summary Physical activity is an important stimulus in the prevention of bone involution. Bilateral bone mineral mass and width of the radius, ulna, and humerus were measured by single photon absorptiometry on 200 women between the ages of 35 and 65 over a 3–4 year period. Two groups were formed: 80 in a control group and 120 in a physical activity group exercising 45 min/day, 3 days/week. The control and physical activity groups were similar in age, height, weight, and level of physical fitness at the beginning of the study. The control group lost bone mineral mass at a rate similar to that of the general population. The left radius bone mineral declined 2.44% per year. Similar rates of decline were observed in the other bones measured. The physical activity group increased in fitness by 13% in the first year of the study. The bone mineral mass of the exercise group declined the first year and then increased; thereby the bone mineral data for the exercise group was analyzed in two sets. During the first year of the program, a decline of 3.77% in bone mineral mass of the left radius, a significantly greater loss than that of the control group, was observed. Decline rates were similar in the other bones measured. In the second and third years, bone mineral mass of the left radius increased by 1.39% per year, and the rate of change was significantly different from that of the control group. There were similar increases in the other bones measured. The data from this study support the importance of physical activity in the prevention of bone mineral loss in the aging female.

Notes: Summary In this paper an alternative approach to nonlinear pharmacokinetic modelling has been developed from first principles. This “Unsteady Model” is able to describe the situation whereby one or more independent drugs and their metabolites compete for free attachment sites in liver, tissue, red blood cells etc. The Unsteady model collapses to well-known existing models viz.: Michaelis-Menten, Langmuir tissue binding and the linear compartment models, under certain well-defined, limiting conditions. The Unsteady model and its collapse to existing models is derived mathematically and illustrated with simulations. For several reasons the Unsteady model would appear to have many advantages and wide application.

Notes: Abstract La3+ stimulated quiescent Swiss 3T3 and 3T6 ceils to enter the DNA-synthesizing S phase of the cell cycle. La3+ and insulin interacted synergistically to increase DNA synthesis. A brief exposure of the cells to soluble LaCl3 optimally stimulated entry into S. La3+ was similar to Al3+ in its mitogenic properties (J. Cell. Physiol.118 , 298, 1984), but La3+ was 10 times more potent than Al3+.

Notes: Conclusions Mycorrhizal fungi increase the rate of phosphate uptake by roots (P inflow) over a range of soil P levels even when mycorrhizal growth increases no longer occur. It is likely that the fungi play a direct part in uptake and translocation of P to the roots. V.A.M. effects on nodulation and N2 fixation are largely indirect, probably resulting from improved P nutrition and growth at low soil P levels. Work on inorganic cation nutrition is much less advanced, but it is already clear that there are interactions between P nutrition and cation uptake which may also be indirect. The pattern of N assimilation (N2 fixation vis-à-vis NaNO3 or (NH4)2SO4 uptake) may modify cation/P interactions. Further work is required to distinguish cause and effect and to clarify the role played by V.A.M. fungi.

Notes: Abstract Evidence for multiple insemination in the mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, was detected by statistical analysis of the enzyme phenotypes in mother-offspring combinations for three loci. The probability of nondetection of multiple insemination events for diallelic loci with two or more males mating with a female was presented. The frequency of multiple insemination for G. affinis is at least 56% but is probably nearer to 100%. The high incidence of multiple insemination together with sperm storage and delayed fertilization could have important effects on allele frequencies through time and space. These effects are due to the increase in effective population size and overlap among generations.

Notes: Abstract The fusion of normal human fibroblasts with SV40-transformed human fibroblasts resulted in hybrid clones, 85% of which exhibited a finite in vitro life-span. Foci of rapidly dividing cells appeared in 15% of the hybrid clones. The cells within these foci repopulated the culture and could then be subcultured through more than 100 population doublings. One or two foci of dividing cells occurred per culture of 105 or more cells. The change to an indefinite life-span was, therefore, a rare event. All hybrid clones, including those that exhibited a finite in vitro life-span, expressed viral T antigen. Thus, even though viral DNA was present and being expressed in all hybrid clones, the senescent phenotype was dominant in these hybrids.

Notes: Abstract A biochemical selection system was used to isolate hybrids after fusion of human diploid fibroblast clones of varying proliferative potential. The distribution of proliferative potentials of the hybrids resembled that of the parent with smaller proliferative potential. Therefore, the phenotype of limited division was dominant in hybrids. This dominance was associated with cells that could achieve seven or less divisions present in the parent populations. Terminally nondividing cells present in clones near the end of their proliferative potential differed from those present in clones that had ceased division (senescent), in that a higher percentage could be induced to divide at least once following fusion with a cell capable of division.

Notes: MINDO/3 calculations have been carried out for a series of branched chain alkanes in order to assess effects of branching on calculated geometries and heats of formation (ΔHf). With vicinal branching, MINDO/3 calculates the central C—C bond to be too long. Bond angles are also found to be distorted. Errors in calculated heats of formation are large when geminal branching is present and significant with vicinal branching. Branching error corrections for ΔHf have been derived and applied to a separate series of branched acyclic and cyclic compounds. For the test sample, application of the branching error corrections gave calculated structures of acyclic branched hydrocarbons with heats of formation having an average absolute error of 1.3 kcal/mole rather than 17.3 kcal/mole before correction. Cyclic branched hydrocarbons are shown to be less well corrected. Calculations of heats of reaction have also been carried out for some isomerization and cyclization reactions using the MINDO/3 and MNDO methods. It is clear from the comparisons that MNDO calculations give less severe errors for highly branched compounds but the errors are still substantial. For prediction of heats of reaction, the error-corrected calculations are shown to be superior to the “raw” calculations obtained by MINDO/3 or MNDO.
