Notes: Abstract In situ hybridization of cloned rRNA genes from Drosophila melanogaster to D. simulans metaphase chromosomes shows that in the tested wild type strains both sex chromosomes contain a nucleolus organizer region. Silver grain counts support the published data that the X chromosomal rRNA gene number is significantly higher than the Y chromosomal.

Description: A series of core samples taken during Cruise 79 of Glomar Challenger, drilling offshore Morocco (Mazagan Plateau), is analyzed for their low-molecular-weight hydrocarbon contents. Fifty-four samples from DSDP Holes 544A, 545, 547A, and 547B, deep frozen on board immediately after recovery, are studied by a hydrogen-stripping/thermovaporization technique combined with capillary gas chromatography. Thirty-eight compounds in the C2-C8 molecular range, including saturated, olefinic, and aromatic hydrocarbons, are identified. Because of large differences in organic carbon contents, the total C2-C8 hydrocarbon concentrations vary from about 20 to 1500 ng/g dry sediment weight in the whole sample series. Organic-carbon normalized values are about 3.2 x 10**4 ng/g Corg for Lithologic Subunits IIIA and IIIB at Site 545 (Cenomanian to Aptian) and 1.0 x 10**5 ng/g Corg for Unit V at Site 547 (Cenomanian to Albian) reflecting the slightly more advanced maturity stage at the latter site. Values exceeding 10**5 ng/g Corg (Site 545) and 2 x 10**5 ng/g Corg (Site 547) are associated with samples that are very lean in organic carbon and are generally rich in carbonate. These samples are enriched by small amounts of gaseous hydrocarbons. A detailed study of individual hydrocarbon concentrations, plotted against depth, reveal additional indications for migration phenomena. At Site 547, for instance, the most mobile hydrocarbons studied (e.g., ethane) appear to migrate by diffusion or a related process from more than 700 m depth toward the surface.

Notes: Abstract Sexuality and reproductive behaviour ofCereus pedunculatus (Pennant) and several forms (subspecies) ofActinia equina (L.) from populations collected along the French Atlantic Sea coast and in different habitats along the European Mediterranean coast were studied. At the stage of 96 septaeC. pedunculatus andA. e. atlantica II exhibited mature oocytes which developed parthenogenetically into larvae. The latter appeared simultaneously in the gastrocoele. AdolescentA. e. atlantica II developed very few mature oocytes and larvae. Following a sterile period, oocytes and young individuals of different age groups were present almost throughout the whole year in adult anemones.A. e. mediterranea I was dioecious and oviparous in any habitat observed. Samples of the larviparousA. e. mediterranea II (collected near Banyuls, France) exhibited male gonads exclusively and contained larvae. Spontaneous longitudinal fission was occasionally observed in adultA. e. mediterranea I and adolescentA. e. atlantica II.

Notes: Abstract We study the behaviour of a single impurity in a two-dimensional Ising model. Local properties in the neighbourhood of the impurity are calculated exactly. The results show that the critical exponents remain unchanged, but the critical amplitudes undergo pronounced changes. Furthermore, we develop a real-space renormalisation group for the perturbed system and calculate by means of two different approximate realisations the correlation functions near the impurity. In all cases we find that an ordered cluster forms around the impurity at temperatures well above the critical temperature. We discuss the relation of this effect to the local freezing-out phenomenon.

Notes: Abstract We consider instanton-type solutions for a lattice model of the disordered electronic system where both the diagonal and the offdiagonal matrix elements are taken as Gaussian distributed random variables. For a large range of distributions we show that the dominant instanton solution is localized at a single site. This solution is taken as the starting point for a perturbation expansion in powers of 1/E 2 in the region of localized states. This expansion has many features in common with the well-known high-temperature expansions, and we suggest to use it for an estimate of critical exponents. We evaluate the first few terms in the expansions of the density of states, the participation ratio, and the localization length for the case of nearest-neighbour hopping on a simpled-dimensional lattice. The tendency of the numerical results is promising.

Notes: Abstract The asymmetric emission of Röntgenbremsstrahlung produced in the scattering of transversely polarized electrons by Au-atoms was measured at an electron energy ofE =mc 2/4 for photon emission anglesθ=60°, 100°, 145° and compared to calculations of this process based on a partial waves method.
