Notes: Raw and cooked samples of nine different commercial classes of the Phaseolus vulgaris L. species were analyzed for their contents of five water-soluble vitamins and nine minerals. On a 100g dry weight basis, the mean vitamin and mineral values of the raw bean samples amounted to the following: thiamin 0.99 mg, riboflavin 0.20 mg, niacin 1.99 mg, vitamin B6 0.49 mg, folic acid 0.30 mg, phosphorus 0.46g, sodium 10.3 mg, potassium 1.54g, calcium 0.15g, magnesium 0.20g, zinc 3.2 mg, manganese 1.4 mg, copper 0.91 mg, and iron 5.84 mg. With a few exceptions variabilities of these nutrients between bean classes exceeded those within classes. Nutrient variabilities in cooked samples, again with a few exceptions, were higher than in the corresponding uncooked material. Retention values of water-soluble vitamins during cooking between bean classes averaged between 70 and 75%. Retention of minerals during cooking ranged from a low of 38.5% for sodium to total retention for calcium, with the majority of the minerals falling into the 80–90% level.

Notes: Aqueous taste thresholds for nomilin, a bitter citrus limonoid, were established by a combination of ascending series and sensory difference (triangle) tests. Results from the 25-member screened panel indicated a detection or stimulus threshold of 0.8 ppm and a recognition threshold of 2.1 ppm. Panelists described nomilin as either astringent or lingeringly bitter. Triangle taste thresholds determined from statistical and graphical techniques ranged from 3.5 ppm for LOGIT calculations to 1.7 ppm for log probability plots. Paired comparisons of individual nomilin and limonin solutions in equal concentrations of 1, 2, 3 and 4 ppm could not be differentiated with statistical significance (P = 0.05).

Notes: Flavor and color concentrates were prepared by a vacuum distillation process from cold pressed Valencia and midseason orange oils and were analyzed quantitatively by gas chromatography. Twenty-five major and minor constituents were identified by mass spectrometry. The influence of the concentration process on oxygenated flavor compounds, primarily aldehydes and alcohols, was evaluated. Aldehydes and color values were determined by chemical and spectrophotometric methods. When compared with midseason orange oils, 25–35% higher concentration of oxygenated flavor compounds and of total aldehydes were found in Valencia orange oils. Midseason oils had 20–30% higher color values when compared with Valencia oils. Cold pressed oils concentrated to 25-fold had an increase in color value of 20-fold, while the concentration of oxygenated flavor compounds increased about 10 times.

Notes: Abstract. An ultrastructural study of Myxobolus exiguus Thelohan, 1895 using interlamellar and subdermal plasmodia from thick-lipped grey mullet, Crenimugil labrosus, revealed differences in the structure of the plasmodia and host tissue reaction. Both plasmodia showed structural evidence of pinocytotic activity, but the surface area of subdermal plasmodia was considerably increased by digitiform extensions of the ectoplasm. A filamentous glycocalyx was a feature of the surface membrane of plasmodia, being more distinct on the interlamellar form. Sporo-genesis involved two morphologically distinct types of generative cells, producing a disporous pansporoblast. Mature spores were oval, measuring 9-0 μm×7.5 μm. Sporogenesis and capsulogenesis were essentially similar to other myxosporea. In the juvenile fish examined the host tissue reaction was slight, involving hyperplasia of epithelial cells associated with interlamellar plasmodia and some collagen deposition and localized melanization associated with subdermal plasmodia.

Notes: Abstract. An ultrastructural study of the cellular response of plaice to Rhipidocotyle johnstonei nom. nov. Matthews, 1968, revealed a chronic inflammatory lesion containing cells mainly of the mononuclear phagocyte series. The ‘granuloma’ included monocytes, macrophages, epithelioid cells and multinucleated cells with peripheral fibrocytes. The presence of small numbers of lymphocytes and plasma cells in the mature granuloma suggests a cell-mediated response. The parasite becomes adult within two months and survives for approximately 10 months, the capsules becoming increasingly fibrotic. Heavy infections in young fish cause fin erosion, haemorrhage and probably impair muscle function, increasing the risk of predation.

Notes: Abstract. Tetramicra brevifilum gen, n. sp, n. is described from the connective tissues throughout the body musculature of turbot Scophthalmus maximus (L.). Uninucleate spores (4.8·2 μm) are characterized by a large posterior vacuole, electron dense inclusion bodies in cytoplasm and nucleus and short filaments with 3–5 coils (50 μm extruded). Sporogony is apansporoblastic and tetrasporoblastic, within a host vacuole. Features of the xenoma (2 mm diameter) include a microvillous surface layer with microtubules and microfilaments and a reticulate nucleus with numerous nucleoli. Adherence between adjacent xenomas results in composite cysts of various sizes and shapes depending on site, being dendritic in the myomeres, arms extending between the fibres. Effects on the host, other than eventual destruction of the host cell, include displacement of muscle fibres in myomeres with loss of attachment to myocommata. Breakdown of the xenoma with release of spores into the connective tissue matrix was associated with a localized necrosis affecting surrounding muscle fibres, with leucocyte infiltration and collagen deposition. Spores phagocytosed by macrophages were destroyed in vacuoles, some with multi-laminate walls. Experimental infections established by intramuscular injection at marked sites remained localized, which suggested that xenomas afford sufficient scope for spore production without the need of secondary invasion. The swimming efficiency of turbot would be impaired in severe infections leading to lowered growth rates and increased mortality in wild populations due to predation and starvation. Feeding hierarchies exist in turbot and the disease could prove significant in farming conditions.
