Notes: An experiment was done to determine the effect of spring and autumn application of asulam and dalapon, nitrogen fertilizer and oversown white clover (Trifolium repens L.) on the productivity of subtropical pasture dominated by carpet grass (Axonopus affinis Chase). Assessments were made of pasture yield, botanical composition, weed invasion and recolonization by pasture species during the 12-month period following herbicide application. Both herbicides decreased the yield of carpet grass and increased that of the more productive paspalum (Paspalum dilatatum Poir.) except after autumn application when the yield of paspalum was greatly reduced by dalapon. White clover became established only on plots treated with herbicide and only after autumn application. Clover yields were greatest on plots treated with dalapon. Asulam was considered to be the most suitable herbicide for altering the balance between carpet grass and paspalum because dalapon initially reduced paspalum yield after autumn application and delayed recovery of total pasture. In addition, dalapon permitted greater invasion by broadleaf weeds. This work showed that herbicides have a potential role for speeding up botanical changes in unproductive carpet grass pasture and further refinement of the technique might provide a useful tool for increasing pasture productivity.

Notes: The sedimentation in the lagoons of the Golfe du Lion coast (Mediterranean Sea, France) records their post-Holocene evolution. The Canet-St Nazaire lagoon provides an example of such an evolution.Eight cores (ranging from 13.5 to 19.7 m in length) from a transect of the lagoon provide a cross-section of the late Quaternary stratigraphy. The sedimentary sequence comprises mud and sand layers. The two sand formations are identified as parts of two distinct shelf-sedimentary prisms. Stratigraphic analysis defines three stages in the recent, muddy infilling, corresponding to the last divisions of the Holocene.Sedimentation rates of the muds, related to climatic and palaeogeomorphological events, largely determine their geotechnical and geochemical properties. It appears, indeed, to be the most important factor in determining the compressibility index, the saturated bulk density and the organic and water contents of the deposits. Subboreal muds, poorly consolidated and rich in organic matter, correspond to a high rate of deposition. In the Subatlantic muds, in contrast, the sedimentation rate is lower whilst there is a decrease in the organic matter and an increase in the degree of cohesion.

Notes: The extent of moisture migration from the flesh of frozen, raw breaded shrimp was studied for 9 months. The experiments were designed to monitor the effects of moisture migration on the total net weights and the total “percent shrimp material.” The breaded shrimp were (1) blast frozen-stored in the retail freezer (−16°F, −26.6°C), (2) blast frozen-stored in the warehouse freezer (−12±F°2°, −24.4°C), (3) individually quick frozen (IQF)-stored in the retail freezer (−16°F, −26°C), and (4) individually quick frozen stored in the warehouse freezer (−12°F±2°, −24.4°C). As storage time increased the percent breading increased for all treatments. The percent shrimp, the gross weights, the net weights, and the percent moisture decreased as storage time increased. The rate of moisture migration was retarded in the breaded shrimp (i.e. IQF and blast frozen) stored in the warehouse freezer, when compared to the rate of moisture migration in the breaded shrimp (i.e. IQF and blast frozen) stored in the retail freezer.

Notes: High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) has been applied to the characterization and quantitation of tartrazine (FD&C Yellow 5) in a variety of food products. After extraction, HPLC analysis is complete within 10 min. Recovery studies of 93–97% indicate method accuracy from three food matrices. The method exhibits a %Cv of less than 5% for standards and samples. This method also separates Yellow 5 from Red 2, and Red 40.

Notes: Effects of moisture loss in tray-packed fresh fillets of Flounder (Pogonias cromis), Red Snapper (Litjanus blackfordii), Croaker (Micropogon undulatus) and Ocean Perch (Sebastes marinus) were studied. The fish, purchased from seafood suppliers and processed into fillets at their prospective plants, were packaged in plastic foam trays lined with absorbent pads, overwrapped, and subsequently stored at 2°C (35.6°F) for 8 days. Gross and net weights decreased whereas the percent drip increased for all fish during storage. Except for croaker, the total moisture content remained virtually unchanged for all fillets during storage. The acceptability of all fillets decreased as the Trimethylamine-Nitrogen concentrations increased.

Notes: An improved line heat source thermal conductivity probe was made to simplify the construction and extend the life of thermal conductivity probes. The accuracy of thermal conductivity measurement is also improved. The better linearity of temperature versus logarithm of time was obtained as compared to published techniques. The probe made with the heater wire and thermocouple on the outside of a sewing needle instead of inside of a hypodermic needle was checked by measuring the thermal conductivity of known samples. Results obtained with the improved probe show lower temperature rise and lower standard deviation.

Notes: An examination of the size/sex relationships and gonadial structure and histology of eight species of the commercially important family Lethrinidae from the North West Shelf of Australia and the Gulf of Carpentaria suggests that protogynous hermaphroditism is the typical mode of sexuality in these fishes. A linear relationship between size and sex ratio, in which females predominate at smaller sizes and males at larger sizes, was demonstrated in five species for which sufficient information was available. All five of these species showed a considerable overlap in the size distribution of the sexes but there was no evidence for the occurrence of primary males in the populations sampled. The tests of all species examined showed typical ‘secondary male’ morphology and the presence of atretic ovarian material (‘brown bodies’). Individuals with intersex gonads were observed in five species. It is suggested that the effects of fishing on such protogynous fish stocks will depend on the precise mechanims, as yet unknown in lethrinids, that control the onset of sex change.

Notes: Heat treatment of concentrated cottage cheese whey ultrafiltrate resulted in loss of calcium and phosphorus. Heat treatment at 100°C for 120 min resulted in a decrease of 21% of the calcium, 14% of the phosphorus, and 7% of the magnesium. Minimal browning of the concentrate occurs after 120 min. At 120°C, minimal browning had occurred after 60 min. Levels of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium had dropped by 41%, 36%, and 20%, respectively. Forty-eight percent of the calcium, 40% of the phosphorus and 26% of the magnesium were removed by heat treatment at 140°C for 24 min. At that point, browning was minimal. Losses of sodium and potassium were negligible for all cases. A first order rate expression was found to represent the precipitation process.
