Notes: : Recovery of eutrophic lakes after nutrient diversion may be delayed if the lake experiences significant internal phosphorus (p) loading to the water column. A maximum dose of aluminum sulfate, defined herein, was applied to the anaerobic sediments of the hypolimnia of two dimictic Ohio lakes following septic tank diversion, with the objective of attaining long term control of the release of phosphorus to the water column from these sediments. The results were compared to a similar, downstream, untreated lake. Total phosphorus concentration declined sharply after treatment and has remained so through 1980 for both lakes, a period of 5 and 6 years of control, respectively. Internal P loading from anaerobic, hypolimnetic sediments was partially controlled by the treatment but there are other important sources, perhaps in the littoral zone, in these lakes. Algal biomass is Smaller and water transparency has increased. Both lakes became mesotrophic after treatment, as described by the Carlson (1977) trophic state index, and remain in that improved condition to date. No deleterious side effects were observed, although one lake experienced a significant decrease in diversity of planktonic microcrustacea and a lakeward extension of the macrophyte community. This method appears to be an effective and lasting means of accelerating the recovery of a eutrophic lake following nutrient diversion.

Notes: The antimicrobial activities of Lauricidin (glycerol monolaurate) and its formulations Lauricidin Plus F, and Lauricidin 812 were neutralized by Tweens 20 and 80. The quantitative relationship depended on the formulation of Lauricidin, the test organism and the concentration of the Tweens. In general Tween 20 and Tween 80 were similar in their abilities to neutralize the antimicrobial properties of Lauricidin. In most cases, (74% of the observations) 3.0% Tweens completely neutralized Lauricidin and its formulations. The effects of the Tweens on Lauricidin and Lauricidin Plus F were also studied quantitatively. In the presence of Lauricidin and Tweens, no inhibition was noticed and in most cases, the viable count was similar to the control. Lauricidin Plus F was much more potent than Lauricidin in inhibiting the organisms tested and the restoration of growth in the presence of the Tweens was not complete. The viable counts in the presence of Lauricidin Plus F and the Tweens were about two or more log cycles lower than the control.

Notes: Grain from three high tannin sorghums had their moisture contents raised by adding distilled water at 15, 20 and 25% W/W, respectively, and were stored under CO2 atmosphere at 25, 35 and 45°C respectively, for 1–20 days. In another trial, grain from the same high tannin sorghum sources was boiled in water at a ratio of 1g to 3 mL for periods of 10–60 min. Both anaerobic storage and boiling treatments deactivated the tannins with time. Moisture content and temperature levels influenced the rate of tannin deactivation during anaerobic storage. The process of tannin deactivation for both anaerobic storage and boiling treatments followed first order kinetics.

Notes: Purified and crude preparations of rice hemicellulose from rice bran, whole rice (brown rice), and milled rice were incubated with four bile acids (cholic, glycocholic, taurocholic, and glycotaurocholic acids) under in vitro conditions of pH, temperature, salinity, time for interaction and so forth to approximate conditions normally found in the intestinal tract. The amounts of bile acids bound gradually increased as the concentration of rice extract increased for all rice varieties, with whole rice extract or rice bran extract. Results suggest an effect of growing areas on the binding properties of rice bran and milled rice.

Notes: Wample, R. L. and Thornton, R. K. 1984. Differences in the response of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) subjected to flooding and drought stress.Comparison of drought- and flood-stressed sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus L. hybrid 894) showed some similarities in response but differences in the mechanisms responsible for the responses to stress. Drought–stressed plants showed typical reductions in leaf water potential with increasing stress accompanied by increased leaf resistance. Photosynthesis declined while photorespiration increased after 48 and 96 h of drought stress. A primary reason for reduced photosynthesis in drought-stressed plants was increased stomatal resistance. No significant 0change in leaf water potential or in leaf resistance in flooded plants was found in this study. However, photosynthesis declined in a manner similar to that in drought-stressed plants and photorespiration showed only a transient increase at 48 h. Dark respiration was significantly higher at 48 and 96 h but the magnitude of the increase cannot account for the reduction in photosynthesis. Since the photosynthetic rate of flooded plants declined while stomata remained open, an effect at a more fundamental level is suggested and is thought to be related to disruption of carbohydrate transport.

Notes: This paper identifies and tries to clarify the effects of a number of changes in the system of delivering mortgage credit and housing subsidies. First, we examine the trends in housing and mortgage market data and policy. This review highlights the perceived relationships of these sectors to the rest of the economy. We then focus on and develop the relationship between four issues that have been fundamental stumbling blocks to the development of effective policy. The issues are: (1) homeownership affordability, (2) measures of housing needs, (3) the costs of cycles in housing production, and (4) the effects of federal mortgage credit programs.
