    Notes: Summary Of 25 cases of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, confirmed by open chest lung biopsy between January 1979 and July 1981, 5 patients had been taking amiodarone in doses less than 600 mg daily for 1 to 6 years. No lung disease had been observed in any patient before the administration of amiodarone, and other drugs, factors and diseases thought to play a role in the causation of pulmonary fibrosis were ruled out. Two patients died of respiratory insufficiency, and only 1 does not now suffer from serious sequelae. Review of a further 5 cases reported in the literature and the present data suggest a causal link between administration of amiodarone and pulmonary fibrosis, and tend to indicate a hypersensitivity mechanism.

    Notes: Abstract Alcohol dehydrogenase from Drosophila funebris and D. immigrans is evident at all developmental stages. The highest activity level appears in third-instar larvae and declines to a lower level at all later stages of development. Both species are monomorphic. The enzyme is a dimer consisting of two identical subunits with molecular weight 27,600. The pI values are 8.6 for D. funebris and 9.02 for D. immigrans. The optimum pH is 8.6 and 8.7 for D. funebris and D. immigrans, respectively. The K m values for NAD+, propan-2-ol, and butan-2-ol are 0.15, 2.90, and 2.08 mm, respectively, for D. funebris and 0.16, 1.53, and 1.49 mm, respectively, for D. immigrans. The half-life for the purified enzyme is 45 days for D. funebris and 18 days for D. immigrans at 4° C. Data on the amino acid composition of both enzymes and peptide maps of alcohol dehydrogenase of D. immigrans reveal that they have marked homologies between them and also with alcohol dehydrogenases of other species. D. funebris shows reduced levels of alcohol dehydrogenase synthesis but has the highest specific activity reported to date for a Drosophila species. D. immigrans synthesises six times more enzyme but the specific activity is comparable to that of other species of Drosophila. This evidence could explain their different alcohol tolerance. The molecular properties of these alcohol dehydrogenases together with other species of Drosophila suggest that the alcohol dehydrogenase of Drosophila has arisen by divergent evolution from a common ancestral gene.

    Notes: Abstract A six-month feeding trial was undertaken in a children's home in Manila on three groups of 27 preschool Filipino children, each on a diet in which rice contributed about 50% of the energy. Total zinc intake of 4–6 mg daily was obtained from analyses of food composites of the institutional diet. Supplementation of this diet with 5 mg zinc and substitution of high-protein (10.4%) rice for average-protein rice (∼~7.4%) together resulted in significantly faster height and weight increases in the experimental group than in the control group. Zinc supplementation alone, however, did not improve the growth of the children.

    Notes: Abstract The protein and energy utilization of brown, undermilled and milled rices (variety IR32) were studied in 5–6 preschool children through diets in which 2/3 of N was from rice and 1/3 from casein or milk powder at 200 or 250 mg N/kg body weight. Brown rice was not significantly inferior to milled rice in terms of nitrogen absorption and retention by the children. Its energy and fat contents were, however, less utilized than those of milled rice. Children on the control casein or milk diets showed better apparent nitrogen absorption than those on the rice-based diets but nitrogen retention of all the diets was similar in all three experiments.

    Notes: Summary White clover and onion plants were grown from seed in pots of sandy loam above pads of mycorrhizal inoculum soil at 0.17–1.40 g/pot (equivalent to 250–2000 kg/ha) and harvested on four occasions. In sterilized soil increasing inoculum rates increased the onset and size of the mycorrhizal growth response of white clover. In unsterilized soil the indigenous mycorrhizal fungi greatly stimulated growth of both clover and onion. Nevertheless, all mycorrhizal inoculum rates further stimulated shoot growth in onion (92% increase over all harvests), while only the highest inoculum rate significantly stimulated clover growth (52% increase).

    Notes: Summary A procedure is described for selection and screening of VA mycorrhizal fungi in pot and field trials. The VA mycorrhizal fungi from 20 farm paddocks with unexpectedly high pasture production were compared withGlomus fasciculatus for ability to stimulate plant growth. The fungi from three soils (F4, F11, and F20) which were 84–142% more effective thanG. fasciculatus at stimulating growth in sterilised soils were then tested for ability to stimulate clover growth in unsterilised soils in pots, and in the field. F4, F11 and F20 were more efficient thanG. fasciculatus and the indigenous mycorrhizal fungi in all except one field soil.
