    Notes: In the western coal-mining area of Ruhrkohle AG, reflection seismic prospecting for the Carboniferous coal measures is severely impaired by structures with halokinetic features. These structures make the interface between Mesozoic and Paleozoic layers, i.e., the top of Zechstein in general, very rugged. Unfortunately the velocity contrast at this interface is very high in that area, the ratio of velocities being 1.5 to 2.0. Therefore, migration and stacking become a problem.Three types of migration are presented:〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1(f, x)-time-migration with vertical time-to-depth conversion as a second step.2Kirchhoff migration down to a level determined approximately by the highest points of the top of Paleozoics, i.e., 0.35 s, and Kirchhoff-downward continuation for all times exceeding 0.35 s. Intermediate static corrections for these latter times with subsequent (f, k)-time-migration and final vertical time-to-depth conversion.3Direct depth migration in the (f, x)-domain using three interval velocities.In all cases an intermediate picking of the velocity interfaces is necessary. In case 2 this occurs at an earlier stage of the process than in case 1, and in case 3 at a still earlier stage.The results of the second and third migration procedures are superior to those of the first. Possibilities for misinterpretation of faults are reduced considerably when the second or third migration procedure is applied.

    Notes: The normal moveout velocity of a reflecting bed is a function of the dips and curvatures of all overlying velocity interfaces. Now let the (N– 1)th velocity interface be a non- (or badly) reflecting bed, whereas the other interfaces, including the base of the Nth layer, reflect satisfactorily, and let the velocities UN– 1 and UN of the (N– 1)th and Nth layer, respectively, be known. Then the normal moveout velocity for the base of the Nth layer, if known in one direction at a certain part of the surface of the earth, provides a second order differential equation in the horizontal coordinates x and y for the depth ZN – 1(x, y) of the unknown interface.The mathematics becomes rather simple in the case of two-dimensional geological structures. For this case and N= 2 the differential equation mentioned can be solved by stepwise integration or by iteration. One of the many possible applications of the new concept is the determination of the structure of the base of an overthrusting sheet.

Over three successive years, depth profiles of C-fixation and excretion, chlorophyll-a concentrations, phytoplankton species composition and bacterial numbers were determined in Lake Vechten, a slightly eutrophic lake in The Netherlands. Special attention was given to the method used to measure extracellular release.Excretion of dissolved organic 14C depended largely upon the photo-synthetic activity of the phytoplankton, ranging from 0–2.5 mg m-1 h-1, representing a percentage extracellular release (PER) of 0–25%.During a period in August, however, a subsurface chlorophyll-a maximum at 5–7 m depth coincided with high excretion rates of up to 10 mg Cm-3 h-1 (PER = 55%). Phytoplankton analysis revealed a stratification in numbers of Mallomonas caudata with a maximum at 5–7 m depth.The results suggest that in these water layers bacterial populations grew at the expense of the dissolved organic carbon compounds excreted by Mallomonas caudata. This means that extracellular release can temporarily function as an important nutrient source for the heterotrophie community in addition to the more or less constant dissolved organic carbon pool.

    Notes: Rg and Ch typing was performed, by serum inhibition, on 145 families that had been typed for HLA/C4/BF/C2 with a view to assessing partial inhibition (p.i.) of anti-Rg/Ch and its haplotype associations. Rg p.i. was found predominatly with the C4A*3A*,2,B*QO homoduplicated C4 haplotype and BFF. The original type of Ch p.i. (Nordhagen et al., 1980) was closely associated with the allotype C4B 2, which also occasionally exhibited complete inhibition (c.i.), but this Ch p.i. was also found with the C4A*1,B*QO haplotype (Rittner et al., 1984a). The second type of Ch p.i. (Giles, 1984) was closely associated with the C4B 1 allotype most frequently in the haplotype C4A*6,B*1 but also with C4A*3,B*1. Both types of Ch p.i. are usually found with BF S. The present data indicate that the determinants of Rg and Ch are not directly related to any particular C4 allotype or extended haplotype.Further examples of C4A 1 with Ch and C4B 5 without Ch determinants have been detected and theoretical considerations are discussed as to how they might have arisen from unequal crossovers in homologous regions that result in hybrid protein molecules.

    Notes: Subcutaneous (s.c.) immunization of mice with viable allogeneic H-2 compatible spleen cells can induce a persistent state of delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) to minor histocompatibility (H) antigens which can be evaluated with a footpad swelling assay. The importance of H-2 compatibility of the injected spleen cells with the recipient for (1) the elicitation of the DTH-reaction, (2) the induction of DTH-related effector and memory T cells and (3) the activation of T memory cells was examined with congenic mouse strains. Spleen cells sharing either the K or D region of the H-2 complex with the recipient could elicit strong DTH-reactions to minor H antigens, though somewhat less than did fully H-2 compatible allogeneic spleen cells. H-2 incompatible cells or cells only sharing I-region coded antigens elicited relatively weak, though significant, DTH-reactivity to the minor H antigens. Similar H-2 requirements for recipient mice were demonstrated in the immune lymphocyte transfer assay. Optimal induction of primary DTH and DTH-related T memory cells for minor H antigens also required H-2 identity of the immunizing cells and the recipient. To some extent, H-2 incompatible cells were able to induce primary DTH-reactivity and memory for minor H-antigens. The secondary DTH-reactivity was not or slightly dependent on the H-2 haplotype of the cells used for booster injection.It is concluded that the DTH-related effector cells are restricted in their recongnition of minor H antigens by K- or D-region-coded antigens. Presumably, macrophage processing of the allogeneic spleen cells after primary and secondary immunization accounts for the capacity of the minor H antigens to activate unprimed T cells and memory T cells when these antigens are presented on H-2 incompatible cells.

    Notes: A model describing the transport of elements through the xylem vessels into the leaf of a red cherry tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill cv. Tiny Tim) in a non-steady state situation is presented. The model describes the upward movement of ions as a mass-flow of the xylem fluid with dissolved elements, with lateral ion escape represented by a first-order process. The model is fitted to data obtained in an experiment in which 15 elements were applied in a solution to a cut stem part with attached leaf and were measured simultaneously by gamma-ray spectroscopy. The model is in good agreement with the transport into the leaf of K+ Na+, Rb+, Cs+, Yb3+, Sm3+ Zn2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Sb(SO4)2 AsO3+4, WO2+4; and Mo7O6+24.Only indirect data could be obtained for Cd2+ and La3+ because of their apparently high affinity for charged sites in the cell walls and high escape constant, respectively. The escape constants were relatively low for all anions, probably due to the presence of a large number of negative charges in the cell walls.

    Notes: Provitamin D2 (ergosterol), vitamins D2 and D3 reduced the calcium-mediated peroxidase secretion in three types of sugarbeet cells in suspension cultures. Vitamin D2 was the most effective in habituated non-organogenic cells which were the less sensitive to calcium; provitamin D2 was the most effective in habituated organogenic cells, while normal non-organogenic cells were equally sensitive to the three types of vitamin D. The calcium ionophore A23187 slightly restricted peroxidase release in all cases, except in the habituated organogenic cells in the presence of calcium where it exerted a promotive effect. The inhibiting effect of vitamin D2 was not counteracted by the ionophore except in this habituated organogenic cell line.

    Notes: Water content, peroxidase activity and isoperoxidases, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity and phenolic content were comparatively analyzed in tissues of normal and vitreous plants cultured in vitro. The release of ethylene in flask atmospheres by normal and vitrifying plants was also measured. On the basis of the results, it is hypothesized that vitrification results from a burst of ethylene controlled by the peroxidase-IAA-oxidase system. An initiating stress (e.g. excess of cytokinins or of NH4+ ions) would mediate the enhancement of the activity of soluble and membrane-bound peroxidases through a rapid modification of the phenolic level. The excess of ethylene in the atmosphere of stressed plants would retroinhibit its own biosynthesis and as a consequence decrease the activities of PAL and acidic peroxidases, thus hindering lignification processes. A parallel decrease in cellulose synthesis due to a diverted conversion of sugars to amino acids is expected (from data in the literature). Deficiency of both cellulose and lignin would allow more water uptake due to reduced wall pressure and bring about the hyperhydric malformations.

    Notes: A GC-ECD titration of IAA in normal auxin (2,4-D)-requiring and auxin-independent (habituated) sugarbeet callus revealed an equal amount in both tissues. A comparison of the content and pattern (through starch gel electrophoresis) of soluble, membrane and wall peroxidases indicated that normal tissues contained a higher level of isoperoxidases. Normal tissues also were found to contain higher levels of peroxidase inhibitors and auxin protectors. The hypothesized peroxidase-mediated higher rate of auxin destruction in normal sugarbeet callus is supposed to be counterbalanced by the 2,4-D-controlled auxin protectors.

    Notes: Glutamate-NAD oxidoreductase, E.C. 1.4.1.3 (GDH), from seedlings of Beta vulgaris cv. Rota, Jahnsch Peragis Comp., was enzymatically characterized. This enzyme with molecular weight of 2.6 × 105 has a pH optimum of around 8 for animation of α-KGA and around 9.5 for the desamination of glutamate. The apparent Km for α-KGA is 6.7 × 10−4M, for NH3 2.5 × 10−3M, for NADH 3.2 × 10−5M and for NAADPH 5.5 × 10−4M. NAD1 inhibits the reaction non-competitively when NADPH serves as substrate. The apparent K1 is 4.5 × 10−4M. The data are discussed on relation to the properties of GDH from other plant sources.
