Notes: The suitability of VLF ground surveys in the investigation of shallow two-dimensional structures is analyzed. For such structures the polar formalism is derived, necessary in practice since the transmitters are generally not in the structural strike or profile. A simple vertical dike is considered to demonstrate the striking anisotropy which can be expected over such a structure, in particular the high apparent resistivity along the direction of a well-conducting dike and the low resistivity across it. The theory is then confronted with the practical example of an asymmetrical vertical dike resulting from a strike-slip fault. Modelling of the survey results is very successful and yields good confirmation of the polar behaviour. VLF ground surveys thus provide a quick and powerful tool for the study of geological accidents within about 100 m of the surface.

Notes: : Mass balance models have been common tools in lake quality management for some years. However, verification for use on reservoirs, especially in the Western United States, has been seriously lacking, In this study, such a verification is attempted using data from the U.S EPA National Eutrophication Survey. Several models from the literature are compared for accuracy in application to the western reservoir data. Model standard error and correlation between estimated and observed reservoir phosphorus concentrations are the Criteria used for comparison. Standard errors am further used to calculate uncertainty of trophic state classification based on estimated phosphorus concentration. The model proposed by Dillon and Rigler (1974) proved most accurate, with a correlation coefficient of 0.86 and standard error of 0.2, based on logarithmic transformed values. Deficiencies in the other models appear to & from coefficients fit to lake data and from inappropriate model formulation.

Notes: Abstract. Purified and crude phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase from the CAM plant Kalanchoë daigremontiana Hamet et Perrier (Bryophyllum diagremontianum) was assayed at temperatures between 10 and 45° C. The optimum temperature of the enzyme activity changed with substrate availability and effector concentration in the assay. l-malate inhibited the enzyme activity and lowered the optimum temperature. Glucose-6-phosphate raised the optimum temperature to 43°C. Km values for phosphoenolpyruvate increased with assay temperature from 0.12 mol m-3 at 15° C to 0.36 molm−3 at 35° C. Inhibition by malate increased with temperature and acidity of the assay. In the crude enzyme 50% of control activity was inhibited by 1.65 mol m-3 malate at 15° C and by 0.5 mol m-3 at 35° C (at pH 7.0). With purification malate sensitivity was lost (Ki values for malate at least 10 times higher). The shift in optimum temperatures for PEP-carboxylase activity thus results from changes in the kinetic parameters with temperature and allosteric effectors. The often low optimum temperatures for CO2 fixation observed in nature may thus be the result of substrate and effector concentrations in the cytoplasm and the antagonistic effect of temperature on substrate affinity and effector efficiency on phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase.

Notes: Phacotus and Coccomonas, two carbonate-secreting, non-marine, planktonic chlorophyte genera, are important sediment contributors mainly in hard water lakes. The calcite loricae of these flagellate algae exhibit characteristic features easily recognizable under the microscope, making Phacotus and Coccomonas important facies fossils for the recognition of ancient non-marine environments. The fossil record of Phacotus can be traced back to the Miocene and it is probable that further research could extend this record into pre-Tertiary periods.

Notes: Sedimentation rates were determined with the 210Pb method in eight sediment cores from Lake Constance. The rate of deposition in the main basin (Obersee) varies from about 0.06 g cm−2 y−1 in the central part to 0.13 g cm−2 y−1 in the eastern part of the lake and then increases rapidly towards the Rhine delta. In the central lake area the rate of deposition has been approximately constant since 1900, and dating with the 210Pb method is in good agreement with sedimentological observations. In the Konstanzer Trichter area, the deposition rate has been increasing since about 1955 as a result of eutrophication and subsequent high carbonate production.Dating with 137Cs is fairly accurate for sediments deposited at a high rate, but is questionable for slowly accumulating ones.A positive correlation of 210Pb fluxes and sedimentation rates indicates that 210Pb flux into sediments follows the distribution pattern of solids. 210Pb profiles in four sediment cores interpreted in terms of a constant flux model display synchronous fluctuations of the sedimentation rate; however, their relation to long-range particulate input variations remains to be proved.Sedimentation rates determined with the 210Pb method were used to calculate recent nutrient and heavy metal fluxes. Anthropogenic fluxes of Zn and Pb are in the same range of magnitude as in other polluted areas in Europe and America.

Notes: Fish toxicity of etho-nonylphenol and of two non-ionic antifoam agents was tested using rainbow trout, Sulmo guirdneri, in 24 h tests. The surface tension of these three compounds was found to depend on concentration and ageing time of the test solutions. The toxicity of the surfactant was about twice as high as known values, with a LC50 of 8.5 mg/1 at 15°C. The addition of antifoam agents to the surfactant solutions further lowered the surface tension but did not alter substantially the fish toxicity of the surfactant. Contrary to expectation, the fish survived in concentrated antifoam solutions at surface tensions as low as 31 dyn/cm for more than 24 h without any apparent damage. The relevance of the surface tension regarding the fish toxicity of detergents in general is critically discussed.

Notes: The growth response of Coelastrum proboscideum Bohlin to cadmiun (3 × 10−9M to 2.4 × 10−7M) was studied. The inorganic media used varied in zinc concentration (1.3 × 10−7M to 3.6 × 10−6M). The data were evaluated by factorial analyses. The influence of zine on the growth depression by cadmium depended on the light conditions (16:8 h light:dark cycles or 24 h continuous illumination periods). Intermittent illumination caused a negative interaction of zinc and cadmium in contrast to a positive interaction or additive effects of these elements during continuous illumination.

The concomitant hydrophilic–amphiphilic transition is the result of a conformational reorganization of C9 and allows insertion of poly C9 into membranes in the form of a ...
