Notes: Abstract The yield of the multiphoton dissociation of CF3Cl and CF3Br induced by TEA-CO2 laser pulses has been studied in the pressure range between 0.25 and 8 Torr, the laser wavelength being chosen so as to excite preferentially the minor isotopic components13CF3Cl and13CF3Br. For both compounds the dissociation probability is found either to increase almost linearly or to decrease monotonously with gas pressure, according as the laser beam is focused or unfocused, respectively. This behaviour is explained by rotational relaxation effects, and a value of 22ns·Torr for the rotational self-relaxation time of CF3Cl is obtained.

Notes: Abstract The multiphoton dissociation of CF3Cl induced by TEA-CO2 laser pulses has been studied in a focused beam geometry. TheR(10) [00°1–02°0] ( $$\bar v = 1071.9cm^{ - 1} $$ ) laser line was used, so as to dissociate preferentially the minor isotopic component13CF3Cl. The isotopic selectivityS and the dissociation probability per pulse ω were measured in the pressure range between 0.25 and 8 Torr. With short laser pulses (90 ns FWHM),S is found to increase slightly with gas pressure up to 2 Torr, and ω, to increase almost linearly over the whole pressure range studied. A schematic model is proposed which satisfactorily explains these results if the transition rates across the energy level spectrum of the CF3Cl molecules are assumed to increase with gas pressure.

Notes: Abstract Changes of cellular activities during batch cultures with Azospirillum lipoferum strain Br 17 (ATCC 29 709) were observed within the growth cycle, at optimal pO2 (0.002–0.003 atm). The relative growth rate for cells growing with N2 as sole nitrogen source during log phase was μ=0.13 h-1 and the doubling time was 5.3 h. Nitrogenase activity was not accompanied by hydrogen evolution at any growth stage, and a very active uptake hydrogenase was demonstrated. The hydrogenase activity increased towards the end of the growth period when glucose became limiting and N2 fixation reached its maximal specific activity. Oxygen consumption and oxygen tolerance at the various growth stages, increased simultaneously with the uptake hydrogenase activity indicating a possible role of this enzyme in an oxygen protection mechanism of A. lipoferum nitrogenase. The efficiency of nitrogen fixation expressed as mg total nitrogen fixed in cells and supernatant per g glucose consumed, was 20 at the early log phase and increased to 48 at the late log phase. About 25% of the total fixed nitrogen was recovered in the culture supernatant.

Notes: Abstract The relative performances of three types of voltage regulator which could be used in implants powered by coupled coils have been studied theoretically and with apparatus on the bench. Ranking the types according to power loss over the region of coupling coefficient in which the output is regulated, switch mode is the best and shunt the worst; although greater efficiency requires more complex circuits. A switch-mode circuit is given whose own current consumption is small enough for an actual benefit from this type to be shown, compared with an equivalent series regulator. The importance of correct transmitter tuning to good efficiency is illustrated.
