Notes: Abstract The effect of various pesticides and derivatives on mitochondrial electron transport systems was assessed. DDT, DDE, TDE, Kelthane, chlorobenzilate, chloropropylate and Acarol were found to be inhibitory towards both heavy beef heart mitochondrial (HBHM) NADH-oxidase and succinoxidase enzyme systems. Dichlorobenzophenone andp-chlorophenol were less inhibitory towards the HBHM NADH-oxidase and did not inhibit the succinoxidase enzyme system. DDA did not inhibit either of the electron transport systems. Carbaryl was not inhibitory towards both HBHM oxidase systems, whereas its degradative product dihydroxynaphthalene was inhibitory at the same concentration. Furadan, Matacil, Baygon and Dimetilan were only slightly inhibitory towards the mitochondrial NADH-oxidase system and did not inhibit the succinoxidase system. Zectran was inhibitory towards the NADH-oxidase system and was not inhibitory towards the succinoxidase system. DDT, DDE and TDE, dihydroxynaphthalene and 1-naphthol inhibited the NADH-oxidase enzyme system on the substrate side of cytochrome c, whereas Kelthane inhibited on the oxygen side.

Notes: Abstract A stepwise regression statistical analysis was used to interpret results from chronic toxicity experiments. Advantage was taken of the independent buildup and decline of the constituents of the PCB mixture being tested (Aroclor® 1254) to associate the concentrations with the induction of two microsomal oxidase systems, aniline hydroxylase and P-450. The concentration of 2,4,5,2′,4′,5′-hexachlorobiphenyl in the liver was shown to be associated with the latter.

Notes: Abstract Annealing studies of cold-rolled Ni3Al established that the recrystallization kinetics obey the Avrami equation and that the grain-growth kinetics obey the relation ¯d=Ct n where ¯d is the average grain size, t the time and C and n are parameters whose magnitude depends on temperature. Disorder is introduced during deformation but subsequently removed during recrystallization. Antiphase boundaries are found in some recrystallized grains but do not show any preference to lie on {100} planes, contrary to predictions based on Flinn's nearest-neighbour approximation model. Twins, dislocation networks an planar faults are also found in recrystallized grains.

Notes: Abstract Currently available models used for predicting human caloric requirements do not reflect the great variability in activity patterns observed among populations, and are insensitive to important anthropometric, demographic, and environmental variables. They are thus inadequate for application to many populations and problems of anthropological interest. We present a model for determining caloric requirements which more accurately accommodates the effects of variation in activity and in anthropometries on individual needs, and which predicts population requirements based on individual needs and demographic parameters. The model is tested on four populations (the Andean community of Nuñoa, Peru, the Dobe !Kung of Botswana, and two New Guinean villages) and is found to provide consistently better estimates of caloric requirements than are generated by the Food and Agriculture/World Health Organization's model. This model should be useful to anthropologists and human ecologists concerned with problems involving human energy consumption, such as the efficiency of subsistence strategies, optimum family composition, or certain consequences of increased labor migration or technological change.

Notes: Abstract The effect of stable dispersion of Al2O3 in copper crystals upon recrystallization kinetics has been studied in three alloys, termed L1, L2 and H2, and in pure copper. L1 and L2 contained particles of similar size (0.028μm), but of differing interparticle spacing, and L1 and H2 contained particles of similar spacing (0.05μm) but of differing size. After a cold-rolling reduction of 50%, alloys L1 and L2 showed retarded recrystallization at 700° C compared with pure copper, there being greater retardation in L2, which had the smaller inter-particle spacing. Extensive recovery prior to recrystallization was observed and this led to deviations from the Avrami equation in describing the recrystallization kinetics. Calculations show that the retardation cannot be due to grain-boundary or sub-boundary pinning by the dispersed phase, and it is concluded that the effect is due to the homogenization of dislocation distribution by the particles suppressing nucleation. Alloy H2 contained larger particles (0.041μm), and exhibited accelerated recrystallization compared with pure copper. This indicates that a very delicate balance must exist between the factors tending to retard and those tending to accelerate recrystallization in these materials. It is suggested that the acceleration arises from an increased misorientation developing within the transition bands.
