    Notes: Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) has been used to evaluate the size and concentration of voids in poly(N,N′-bis-(phenoxyphenyl)pyromellitimide), PMDA-ODA. Analysis of the angular dependence of the scattering indicates the presence of voids ranging from 50 to 150 Å in radius. Integrated SAXS demonstrated that the volume fraction of voids was 7 × 10-4. These results were supported by measurements of the attenuation factor as a function of the sample thickness.

    Notes: The flow of polypropylene, nylon 6,6, and 33-percent glass-fiber-filled nylon 6,6 into a tensile bar mold was investigated. Pressures needed to fill the cavity and runner system were measured as a function of fill time and melt temperature. The experimental results were compared to pressures predicted using the Moldflow flow-analysis programs. Correlation between experimental and predicted pressures was good provided that accurate input data to the computer programs were used. The choice of runner diameter in the approximation of the irregular shaped runner of this tensile bar mold was found to be important, since the runner length was approximately 40 percent of the total flow length. Material properties of particular importance were thermal conductivity, viscosity, and no-flow temperature (the temperature at which the resin will no longer flow). Viscosity/shear rate/temperature data are needed for the computer programs and two methods of obtaining the data were examined: an Instron capillary rheometer and a capillary nozzle on an injection-molding machine. Good agreement between the two methods was found for polypropylene over a shear rate range of 100 to 10,000 s-1. Only the injection-molding capillary nozzle could be used for the nylon- and glass-filled nylon due to the thermal degradation that occurred in the Instron rheometer.

    Notes: A branched pore kinetic model for aqueous phase activated carbon adsorption is presented in which the carbon particle is separated into rapidly and slowly diffusing regions. The model was developed to overcome problems arising from a single rate parameter analysis and is shown to describe experimental data well. In addition to very different rates of transport in the two regions, parameters estimated by regression analysis indicated differences in the adsorptive characteristics.

    Notes: Vacuum sublimation of cadmium sulfide for manufacture of thin film solar cells was analyzed. The sublimation unit consisted of a two chamber cylindrical source bottle having a rate control orifice and exit nozzle. Coupled heat and mass balance equations were solved using appropriate rate equations for flow in the free molecular-to-viscous transition regime. The model equations predicted that heat transfer has a significant effect on sublimation rate. Experiments were carried out over a range of temperatures with several rate control orifices and exit nozzles. Quantitative agreement between measured rates and those calculated from the model equations was obtained.

    Notes: An apparatus is described which permitted a perfusant (lactated Ringer's solution) to be passed through a porous sample in a pulsatile manner with a square wave pressure profile. The “on” time, “off” time, number of cycles and pressure amplitude were separately controllable. Using this apparatus and immersing the sample in stirred, heparinized, human blood, there was a certain “off” time below which platelet adhesion to the sample abruptly ceased. The values of this “off” time, termed the activation time ta for platelet adhesion were ∼0.5 sec for 0.2 μm pore size cellulose diacetate/nitrate (millipore filter) and ˜0.3 sec for 0.2 μm polycarbonate (nuclepore filter). After a single cycle with a 5 sec “off” time, adhered platelets on both these materials showed pseudopodia, varying degrees of spreading and membrane perforation.

    Notes: To prevent the premature occlusion of vascular prostheses, endothelium is being cultured experimentally onto synthetic flow surfaces. A rapid method of identifying cultured endothelium on the prosthesis is valuable for determining the degree of fibroblast and smooth muscle cell contamination and to screen for endothelial cell transformation. Fluorescent Factor VIII related antigen (FVIII-RA) staining has been used to identify cultured endothelium, but results in excessive staining of the underlying prosthesis, loss of morphologic detail, and deterioration of the FVIII-RA antibody reaction with time. We have applied the peroxidase antiperoxidase (PAP) method of antigen staining to permit staining of FVIII-RA and thereby to permit a sensitive and specific identification of human or canine endothelium with a concurrent analysis of morphologic detail.

    Notes: The proton nmr spectra of the oligoribonucleotides in the series CpXpG, ApXpG, CpApXpUpG, and ApGpXpC (X = A, G, C, and U), together with the reference compounds CpG, ApG, CpApUpG, and ApGpC, have been measured. A complete analysis of all the nonexchangeable base protons and the ribose H-1′ protons was made. The insertion of a nucleotide X into a oligoribonucleotide led to shift changes at both nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor positions, which were rationalized in terms of the shielding abilities of the various bases. The derived shielding trends in the ApGpXpC series of compounds were successfully used to predict the chemical shifts of resonances in the related ApGpXpCpU series.

    Notes: In connection with our goal of calculating by practical methods the frictional properties of biopolymers from surface shells composed of spheres, we have investigated by the method of reflections the low-Reynolds-number hydrodynamic interaction between two unequal-sized spheres in translation. Previous results, in which the velocities were used as independent variables and which have the form of truncated infinite power series, were substantially extended. By inversion of the power series, new power series with better convergence properties were obtained. Equivalence of these inverted power series with those previously reported based on the method of reflections, when forces are used as independent variables, was demonstrated, and the solutions were again substantially extended. Applying the Lagrange interpolation to data generated from exact theories for the hydrodynamic inteaction between two spheres, it was demonstrated that the various forms of the method of reflections do not just give reasonable power series, but actually yield optimal ones. These findings constitute a unification of diverse approaches and show methods of interconversion of results. On the basis of the power series obtained, a set of new hydrodynamic interaction tensors for two unequal spheres were derived. While the new tensors described the case of two unequal spheres with considerably more accuracy than those previously reported, direct application of these tensors to objects composed of more than two spheres revealed some unexpected problems resulting from overcorrection in the fourth-order term. However, when the tensors were preaveraged over all orientations of the multisphere object, a formula for the scalar translational friction coefficient was obtained that outperformed all but the most involved earlier approaches. It thus constitutes an improved and practical solution to the problem of computing translational friction coefficients of objects describable by a surface shell of many spheres, such as proteins.
