Description: The ISEE observations of the pi2 magnetic pulsations occuring substorm onset in the inner magnetosphere are discussed. One of these events which was also detected as a pi2 event by the AFGL midlatitude magnetometers is considered. The event occurred when the foot of the ISEE field line was over North America. The ground and satellite signals are remarkably similar: they start and stop at the same time, have the same period and can be correlated cycle by cycle. The waves are detected in the electric field data from ISEE 1 and in the magnetic field data from both ISEE 1 and ISEE 2. Calculation of the Poynting vector at ISEE 1 shows that the energy flowed mainly westward, but that there was also a component towards the nearer (southern) ionospheric foot of the field line. The phases between the various field components measured by ISEE 1 and 2 indicate that this is a standing hydromagnetic oscillation.

Description: The ISEE 1 and 2 spacecraft studied whether observed amplitude variations in hydromagnetic waves were due to the motion of the spacecraft through a time stationary structure or were due to temporal changes. The data provide evidence for spatially limited standing hydromagnetic wave resonant regions. The standing wave harmonic and Poynting vector were deduced from the simultaneous observations of the wave magnetic and electric field.

Description: Long period geomagnetic pulsations with periods between about 10 and 600 s have been observed by ground magnetometers for over 100 years. Dungey (1954) suggested that these pulsations might be hydromagnetic waves resonating on geomagnetic field lines. One of the most recent techniques employed to examine pulsations and to test pulsation theory has been that of multispacecraft observations. A review is attempted to show how multisatellite observations have been used to provide new insight in the generation mechanisms, propagation characteristics, and resonant properties of magnetospheric pulsations. Some studies show how measurements of the plasma environment both in the vicinity of the waves and elsewhere have enabled tests of resonance theory in ways which were not previously possible with single satellite measurements.

Description: Endurance life tests were run with standard-design bearings of vacuum-melted AISI 4320 and CBS-1000M at 12,500 rpm, and high-speed bearings of CBS-1000M and trough-hardened AISI M-50 at 18,500 rpm. Both sets of bearings were of 120.65 mm bore-tapered roller type, and were run under heavy combined radial and thrust loads until either fatigue failure or a preset cutoff time of 1100 hours was reached. It was found that: (1) the CBS-1000M standard-design bearings ran to a 10% life approximately six times that of the rated catalog life; (2) twelve identical bearings of AISI 4320 ran to ten times rated catalog life without failure; (3) cracking and fracture of the cones of AISI M-50 high-speed design bearings occurred at 18,500 rpm due to high tensile hoop stresses; and (4) four CBS 1000M high-speed bearings ran to twenty-four times rated catalog life without spalling, cracking or fracture failures.

Description / Table of Contents: Contents The paper deals with a numerical method for the computation of threedimensional electric fields. An integral equation method is applied which uses an areal source distribution situated on the field boundaries. In the case of electrostatic fields these sources are surface charges, in the case of slow-variable electric fields surface currents. In the presented contribution the field components are determined by means of an analytical differentiation of the potential coefficients. The integration over areal sources which have a great distance from the field point is solved by a numerical method, for source points situated near the field point by an analytical calculation. The method is illustrated by means of two examples.

Notes: Abstract The pattern of glycosylation of newly synthesized human and routine immunoglobulin μ-chains varies according to the degree of inhibition of N-glycosylation effected by using the antibiotic tunicamycin. Tunicamycin, at high concentrations, can apparently block N-glycosylation of μ-chains completely as judged by SDS-PAGE analysis of the biosynthetically labelled products. At lower concentrations of tunicamycin, fully giycosy]ated and totally non-glycosylated chains were the predominant molecular species. The paucity of the predicted partially glycosylated μ-chains leads us to suggest that the addition of oligosaccharides to the appropriate acceptor sites is a cooperative process. Long exposure of fluorographs reveals each of the predicted intermediately glycosylated forms of the μ-chain, and counting the number of bands on such fluorographs may prove useful in the preliminary determination of the number of N-linked oligosaccharides in a given glycoprotein.
