Notes: [Auszug] THE late Hans Kniep from 1915 onwards and Mlle. Bensaude in 1918 described the union of two mycelia of + and − strains as a necessary preliminary to the formation of the sporophore in heterothallic species of Hymenomycetes. In such cases, plasmogamy is usually separated from karyogamy in the ...

Notes: [Auszug] AN interesting ring phenomenon which is expected to throw light on the mechanism of condensation of sputtered particles was noticed while working on cathodic sputtering. Details will be published elsewhere. It was noticed that if a small bead of plasticine or a small drop of oleic acid is ...

Notes: [Auszug] CROSS-COUSIN marriage is widely prevalent among the primitive peoples of Assam, Of the two types, the marriage with the daughter of the mother's brother is more frequent. Different theories have been put forward by ethnologists as to the origin of this custom, but none of them seems to be ...

Notes: [Auszug] RECENT investigation in situ among the different tribes of Assam has led me to think that the hitherto accepted theories on the origin of levirate seem to be untenable in this area. This institution varies so widely from area to area, and the theories propounded so far being based on materials ...

Notes: [Auszug] IN a salt of the iron group, though the spin angular momentum of the paramagnetic ion is not directly affected by the crystalline electric fields acting on the ion, yet indirectly it is, owing to its coupling with the orbital angular momentum of the ion, which is easily affected by these ...

Notes: An algorithm to generate universal matrices for plane triangular finite elements for the general ‘quasi-harmonic’ equation is presented. For every member of the triangle family three numerical universal matrices are obtained which are independent of the size, shape and ‘material’ properties of the element. Of these, two are basic and the third can be generated from one of these two. The element ‘stiffness’ matrix is conveniently generated by manipulating these two basic matrices taking into account the size, shape and material properties of the element in a simple manner.

Notes: Trypsin was immobilized on sand using five different methods. Attempts were made to attach amino-functional groups onto sand using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, hexamethylenetetramine, hexamethylenediamine, and melamine. Glutaraldehyde was used as a bifunctional agent in all the methods. Methods for the estimation of the proteolytic 1activity and protein content of immobilized trypsin were standardized. The maximum retained activity was observed for trypsin immobilized on sand via 3-aminopropytriethoxysilane and glutaraldehyde. Immobilized trypsin showed a shift in the pH optimum toward the acidic side over that of soluble trypsin in all five cases. The optimum temperature for both native and immobilized trypsin prepared by the silane-glutaraldehyde method was found to be 45°C. However, the pH and thermal stabilities of immobilized trypsin were observed to be better than that of the native enzyme.

Notes: A system for the aqueous size exclusion chromatography (SEC) of starch hydrolysates has been developed. Sepharose CL is the chromatographic support material, and aqueous sodium hydroxide solution is the eluent. Various factors affecting the resolution of the proposed system are discussed. Support materials having small particle size and narrow particle size distribution are necessary for maximizing separation efficiency. The ionic strength of the eluent, however, has a negligible effect on separation efficiency. The fractionation range of the system has been broadened by connecting in series columns containing two different Sepharose-CL gel types according to the bimodal pore size distribution concept. Well-characterized sodium polystyrene sulfonate and dextran standards are used to calibrate this SEC system. The Coll-Prusinowski calibration procedure leads to a linear calibration curve over a wide molecular weight domain.

Notes: The effects of a number of chemically nonreacting organic on shrinkage and stress-strain properties of preoriented semicrystalline poly(ethylene terephthalate) filaments have been studied. The changes in shrinkage and mechanical properties are found to be highly dependent on time and temperature, as well as on tension applied on the yarn during the treatment. The changes brought about by the solvents at lower temperatures (i.e., below 100°C) are either comparable with or more than those produced by thermal treatments in air or silicone oil above 200°C. The possibility of using slovent treatment for setting polyester for dimensional stability at low temperature as an alternative to the normal dry-heat-setting method has been discussed.
